I just explained it. We "earned the right to survive" because we are resistant to the bacteria that live on earth. The aliens were not.

i understood what actually happened just fine. what i'm saying is that the final voiceover seems to be trying to make a larger point than just explaining why the aliens die -- and that larger point, whatever spielberg may think it might be, is garbled and doesn't seem to have much to do with the rest of the movie.

yeah i kind of don't think it was supposed to be as simple as that, i felt like the voiceover at the end was crying out to make some kind of a profound statement but ultimately it really failed to do that.

From what I have read, the novel is based on the fact that military force and being technologically advanced is not a successful way to achieving goals, desires, or cooperation between two. Being technologically superior to humans, they assumed that they would have no trouble taking over an inferior group. The interactions between countries today proves this to be true and is ultimately what the author was trying to point out when writing the novel. The opening and ending voiceovers where taken verbatim from the novel and were extremely misplaced and random in sequence with the movie.

i really wanted the son to be dead.. or at least have a limb or two blown off..

the thing about weapons being inferior explains why the birds got through to the tripods.. still.. it's fucking stupid.. if you're an intergalactic race of badass killing machines i think you'd run into other bacteria on another planet.. and if they're smart enough to bury teh things in the earth so long ago, shouldnt they be smart enough to do some recon work and find out about the planet?

This is from someone who has not read the book or seen the original movie, but can someone please explain how these rays the aliens were shooting at people were able to destroy cars and turn people into dust, yet left clothing intact?

Also, when they walk up to the house in Boston that somehow remained perfectly intact and the son walked out, a gigantic "WTF" went up from the theatre.

...........................
As they take an eye for an eye until no one can see, we must stumble blindly forward, repeating history.
