Just when you thought you've seen it all, Fairview Park police were in hot pursuit recently of a scooter designed for the disabled, after its owner stole a 12-pack of beer from a grocery store.

At about 5:15 p.m. Feb. 14, a 50-year-old Fairview Park man riding that electric scooter, sped out of the Tops supermarket on Lorain Road. He failed to pay for the beer, stashed under his feet. Police said the man needed the scooter, because of numerous, alcohol-related health problems.

Officers soon spotted him buzzing east along Lorain Road, near West 204th Street. After a short pursuit _ if you could call it that _ his scooter was stopped at West 202nd Street and Lorain. Police said the drunken man claimed a friend had given him the beer, but Tops employees disputed that, and had videotape from a security camera to prove it.

He was charged with theft and disorderly conduct while intoxicated. He couldn't be charged with drunken driving under state law, which does not consider scooters for the disabled as vehicles. After he was taken to jail, the man began having some undisclosed medical problems, so he was released on personal bond.

my car! it's not considered a street legal vehicle because of the lack of lights, blinkers and such.
