If there is a living fan of the x files on here I will be thrilled! In honor of the movie being released tomorrow, Sci Fi channel is airing an x files marathon all day today.
Anyone going to check out the movie? I can't wait to see what they do with it, I know it's a stand alone movie but I have high expectations from Chris Carter. Though Mulder is looking kinda old these days...I imagine that it will be set 10 years or so later. You're not Christ, you're not Prince Hamlet, you're not even Ralph Nader! |

Here's a review, which isn't all that great. Not that the first movie was great either. But that's to be expected.

That would have been semi-laugh worthy if your sound clip actually worked! You're not Christ, you're not Prince Hamlet, you're not even Ralph Nader! |

Am I the only one here that preferred John Doggett to Fox Mulder?

Probably! Doggett is alright but Mulder has great one-liners that can't be replaced!

I loved the movie. It might have something to do with the fact that they stayed away from the whole "alien conspiracy" (which I never enjoyed all that much anyway) and focused on Mulder and Scully's idealism vs. rationalism interplay.

I'm a big X-Files fan watched it all the time when I was younger, the movie was entertaining and very watchable but Mulder and Scully just didn't seem like Mulder and Scully anymore and the story was kind of weak. They'd have been better off continuing the mythology and having the alien invasion occur and increase the budget of the movie.

I think not introducing the alien concept is great . For one thing, the series ended several years ago and it's a great stand alone film for those who didn't ever keep up w/ the mythology of the x-files. In fact, some of those stand alone episodes are my favorite! It makes no sense to revisit old territory. THe first movie was about alien human hybrids - there doesn't need to be another. Government conspiracies would still be enjoyable. I'm going to check it out this week!

i liked the movie, but something about it bothered me. it wasn't as good as i had hoped, but it was entertaining. i was also not happy with the shipper scenes... but i should have seen that coming.
yes you are.
YES. i know exactly what you are saying. that was probably what was bothering me. although the mythology got kind of ridiculous at the end... i just don't know. *~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~* |

I'll tell you what bothered me about it. The characters are shells of their former selves. Part of what was great about mulder was his theories, one liners, all around over the topness. Those qualities totally disappeared for this movie. His words made it seem like he was so intent on solving the case but we don't really see him actually doing anything other than "going for a ride" or some nonsense. Even though scully wanted nothing to do with it, banter still could have gone on between the new chick and the new dude. After cutting out clippings for years and obviously obsessing over supernatural things you'd think mulder would JUMP at the opportunity to be fronting this, even if he isn't an FBI agent anymore.
Honestly I think they tried to do too much with it. I would have liked to see Chris Carter drop the emotional drama and leave it in the first 5 minutes of the film after which scully and mulder would have jumped back into action like old times rather than scully being an emotional basketcase living with a recluse FBI agent. They could have expanded on some of the "monsters of the week" episodes and stuck with that route. Too much personal drama. Still liked it none the less, though I can definitely see why x files fans would be disappointed. most of us know after the first movie not to have high expectations. Hard to say whether Chris carter lost his touch or whether he was just trying to please a general audience. I did enjoy the film's subtle things, the clipping about princeton, the george bush thing, and Skinner's timely appearence. You're not Christ, you're not Prince Hamlet, you're not even Ralph Nader! |

^^
the george bush thing was hilarious. there were about 15 people in the theatre when i saw it, and i swear, all 15 laughed at that part. i did enjoy it myself, but i completely understand what you are saying. the emotional shit between scully/mulder was stupid. i was never a fan of their "relationship", and i never will be. i didn't think it fit in well with the movie. and since you mentioned it, i know what you mean about mulder and scully being only shells of themselves. i think scully was a bit more herself than mulder was (she always wanted to be a doctor, so that was definitely a believable role for her) but you are right about mulder and the whole jumping at this chance. the only thing i can think of is maybe cc wanted to play a little bit on mulder having resentment towards the fbi about everything that happened... but still. he's still obsessed over the paranormal and he always will be. i don't know. maybe we're both obsessing/reading too much into this. i don't think so, but eh. it was entertaining, i enjoyed it, especially the little random subtle things in it, like you said. and a few of the one liners that they grabbed out of previous episodes/the other movie were nice to catch in there, something that the casual fan wouldn't n notice. and skinner's appearence? lol, i totally called it. when scully said, "well give me someone who has the balls" or something to that effect, i thought, "and enter SKINNER!" haha. nice to chat on this board with someone else who shares my obsession. thanks for starting this thread. imo, though, it could have been better. 7/10 *~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~* |

haha yeah I saw it with my dad and told him "I bet you skinner is going to do a sweeping rescue." We both thought it was hilarious when it actually happened!
I hated how Scully was all about "being away from the darkness." And Scully just happened to find something about limb transplantation experiments when she was researching stem cell research? Did you stay past the credits? There was something extra special and extra lame. Maybe I am thinking about it too much! You're not Christ, you're not Prince Hamlet, you're not even Ralph Nader! |

Um....yeh. If I were you, I'd just be happy they made another X-Files w/ much of the original cast rather than trying some "re-boot" w/ Matt Damon and Angelina Jolie in an attempt to be "profitable." Or better yet, a prequel starring Hannah Montana and Zach Efron w/ a special appearence by the Jonas Bros (as "The Lone Gunmen.") Knowing you don't know is wholeness. Thinking you know is a disease. One huge problem is they don't work at all in the FBI building and they don't wear the old school business suits. It just didn't feel like the show. Episodes like the Pilot and Beyond the Sea were far more epic and movie-like than this episode, Bad Blood too (my favorite episode).
