KISS will lick it up at Sarnia Bayfest
Wed, March 25, 2009

By TARA HAGAN, SUN MEDIA

Bayfest’s rock weekend lineup is official, with KISS, Counting Crows, Stone Temple Pilots and The Trews hitting the stage in July.

Organizer Michele Stokley said she was relieved to finally get the word out.

“People have been so anxious to know the lineup. It’s been more overwhelming this year than any other year,” she said, noting online petitions and social networking groups focused on Bayfest 2009.

“It’s great that people are putting so much thought into Bayfest.”

Internet rumours had focused on KISS making an appearance in Sarnia, and Stokley said she can finally confirm it.

“We’ve been trying for years and years to get them,” she said, noting organizers came close last year but conflicting tour dates kept the legendary rockers away.

“It feels really good; we’re really excited.”

The two-weekend Rogers Bayfest concert will kickoff Thursday July 9 with U.S. rockers Counting Crows. The band is well known for their 1993 hit single “Mr. Jones,” and most recently for the song “Accidentally in love,” featured on the Shrek 2 soundtrack.

“They’ve got so many hits,” said Stokley. “And they’ve never played in this area before so it’s a great way to start things off.”

Opening for Counting Crows will be special guest The Trews, a Canadian rock group hailing from Nova Scotia. The group has played numerous shows in Sarnia and is one of the most requested bands to play Bayfest, Stokley said.

“They’re just a great Canadian rock band. Every time we’ve had them here, they’ve sold out.”

KISS will follow on Friday, July 10. Led by Gene Simmons and known for its trademark face paint and stage outfits since emerging in the 1970’s, the band has sold more than 85 million records worldwide.

“It’s more than just a rock show. It’s everything that goes with KISS. They’re a great band to see live,” said Stokley.

Wrapping up the rock weekend are the Stone Temple Pilots, a California foursome led by Scott Weiland.

“They have something like 15 singles on the Billboard Top Ten,” said Stokley. “That’s huge. And they don’t tour a lot.”

Stokley said organizers want to make ticket prices more affordable this year.

“You can see by the ticket prices that we really want people to come to it all,” she said, adding some Bayfest staff thought the printed ticket price was a mistake. “We want people to travel to Sarnia, and see it all.”

Individual ticket prices run from $22.99 to $129.99, while a weekend rock pass ranges from $57.99 to $199.99.

The country headliners, Tim McGraw and Brad Paisley, were announced earlier for July 17 and 18, with opening acts Jason Blaine, Doc Walker and Deric Ruttan.

Tickets are available locally at Stoke’s Bay, Stoke’s Inland, The Coffee Lodge, Sam the Record Man, and Libro Financial, or online at http://www.sarniabayfest.com.

Tickets are available for individual shows, rock-weekend passes, country weekend passes, and all-show passes.

Oooohhhh, that would be nice. That was a really awesome, wonderful, fantastic, thrilling tour last year. It really helped make that a year to remember for me. I would love to be able to see them again this summer.
