I really can't wait for this show, hopefully they change up the setlist. If Robert wasn't bullshitting about the STP Christmas song then hopefully if it's out they play it. And what if.....they play a song that will be on the next record?

Maybe the Mirage will have a video feed from Club Nokia for some live STP songs or something...

I'm guessing that could be it since the article makes multiple mistakes including that "STP are planning a 2009 reunion tour." Either that or Scott tapes it in Vegas in the afternoon or in a live studio from Los Angeles.

So, anyone know the opener for this show...or is it only STP on NYE?
Also, what time is everyone going? I think doors are at 8:30pm... _____________________ "So much depends on the weather..." 2010 Concerts: 1/17 Aaron Lewis 1/26 Everclear 2/21 Alice In Chains 2/22 Alice In Chains 2/23 Alice In Chains 3/7 Black Joe Lewis 3/18 Stone Temple Pilots? 3/19 Stone Temple Pilots 3/20 Stone Temple Pilots 5/22 STP and ??? 5/23 STP and AiC |

They didn't allow my camera in but I got some cool iPhone pictures, hopefully somebody else sneaked a video camera in because everybody here needs to see footage of this show. They went on at around 10:45PM, which was around when I expected. Best concert I've ever been to, even better than the Hollywood Bowl show, they were all just so into it and Scott was on, dancing and shit. The crowd was awesome. Scott was sober. Anybody who thinks he's on drugs right now is nuts, he was gliding around the stage. His voice was tired for the first couple of songs but it really seemed to pick up after that, just such amazing energy, Scott interacted a lot with Robert and Dean, they all seemed to be getting along great. I know the set list was the same (except for the Silvergun Superman and Big Empty switcharoo), but man it was still fucking amazing. Redemption Song sounded a lot more full and they did a lot of jamming, Sour Girl kicks ass now. They did some cool jamming leading into the New Years countdown which was so last minute I thought they'd forgotten. When they played Sex Type Thing as the balloons were falling it was such a cool site.
The whole crowd was having a blast and so was STP. Lots of drunk people hahaha. Such a magical show, I am very fortunate to have seen them for two amazing shows this year (the Kimmel performance was solid too but Scott's voice was shot). Scott was on, his voice may not be the same, but this is as good of a show as he can put on in 2008/2009. He sounded like classic Scott Sex Type Thing and onwards though, no shot voice for those songs, sounded like the record. Such a fun night, what an amazing show, I love this fucking band, thank God they reunited, great fucking year STP wise. They reunited, saw them three times, met Scott, just awesome. What a difference in seeing Scott solo two weeks ago at KROQ Almost Acoustic Christmas Night 2 and Scott tonight with STP. It's like seeing completely different people, with STP I think Rob, Dean, and Eric just make him better, it's hard to explain. After seeing such an amazing show like this any break up rumors are just laughable. They were getting along great and played GREAT, it'd be cheating the audience if they broke up anytime in the next several years, they've got to know they are special together, that's why they'll stay together. Hopefully I'll have some balloon pictures and stuff up soon. Also some other notes Dean fucked up the opening to Trippin then Robert and Scott played around with him, pretty funny moment. Robert did a lot of talking. Also when the clock struck midnight I saw Robert kiss his wife and Scot kiss.....Paz. Dean and Eric probably kissed their wives too but I didn't see it. The jams they played were really cool too, they probably jammed for a good 5 minutes around midnight. Man it was so amazing. Also Down sounded fucking great tonight. ---------------------------------- STP SHOWS: 5/1/08 6/24/08 12/31/08 7/1/09 STP RELATED SHOWS Velvet Revolver- 7/22/06 Velvet Revolver- 9/15/07 Scott Weiland- 12/14/08 |

STP NYE '08 lived up to all expectations.
It had been rumored that there would be a NYE show since way back in June, and I knew it would be the "must see" show of the year if it actually came to be. LA would be our 13th STP show of they year, and the fellas would DEFINATELY need to be in top shape to beat their previous performances earlier this summer ie LV/RotR. There were a couple things I had reservations about...the 1st being that Scott has been performing so much lately, that it had really taken a toll on his voice - which was evident during the KROQ Almost Acoustic Christmas performace. The 2nd issue was the lack of setlist change. Most nights, STP will play 17-20 songs, which only accounts for roughly 30% of their total catelogue. That's not even touching on the covers/side projects they have all done in years past. I just felt it was getting a bit predictable. Anyways, Michelle and I got to Club Nokia around 4pm the day of the show. Doors were supposed to be at 7 or 8...so I thought we should get there a couple hours early for really good GA spots! When we got there, it was a small group of about 6-8 people. One of the guys out front was (I believe) Dean's guitar tech, taking a smoke break. I went up to him and said hello, and asked if he remembered me from opening D&B @ Red Rocks (he gave me the megaphone when I was done). He said yeah, and asked if I saw the guy who jumped on stage from the crowd just after I got off that security had to beat back offstage. He said he saw it on youtube for a while, then it got dropped!!! From there it was pretty much just waiting and talking current music with people as they starting lining up. Its always interesting to see how STP can attract fans from any and every background...guess it just shows how their music is indeed universal. Security let us in @ 7:30, and Michelle quickly secured us a prime spot on the rail. The Color Turning - off Scott's Softdrive label, came on around 9pm and played about 5 songs...I don't know if they were feeling a little out of place or what, but they just seemed a little nervous or something. They sounded good musically, and the lead singers vocals probably needed to be turned up just a tad. Although I do give them extra credit for using a xylophone in their set. Next was Billy Boy on Poison - a punk/glam/noise band from LA whose average age is about 16. Their lead singer is quite entertaining, but the noise all starts to sound the same by their 3rd song. They played 6-7 songs and exited stage left to make way for STP. Around 10:40pm the house speakers starting playing "Good Times Bad Times", followed by the cartoonish "jazz" number that signals STP's arrival. I had my fingers crossed that they wouldn't open with Big Empty, and they didn't. Instead, they offered up Silvergun Superman as their 1st song of the night. Scott kinda fumbled his way thru the first verse...but it was his only miscue all night. Also - THERE WAS NO ELECTRONIC BACKDROP...gotta say I missed it The next two songs - Wicked Garden and BBB got the crowd charged up and bouncing around...I think I still have some bruises Next came the Purple Trilogy - Vasoline, Big Empty, and Lounge Fly. They just flat out killed it. Excellent in every way. Scott intro'd the next three songs by saying something like they don't always have to play hard rock, but can slow things down a bit. LPS, Sour Girl, Creep and Redemption Song (cover) fit into that category. Crackerman brought everyone back to mixing it up with their neighbors...Plush was easily one of the crowd's faves, and Interstate reminded us that only the DeLeo Bros should try to play this timeless classic. SLDD got a nod with Too Cool Queenie which hadn't been in the rotation in a while I'm guessing (but still sounded great). Down was the final song before the midnight countdown, which Scott counted off and the crowd was covered in red and white balloons from the venue ceiling. Sex Type Thing kicked off STP '09, with Sin wrapping the main set. After a few moments, STP came back out and fired up the crowd with Dead & Bloated and Trippin. Two solid hours of rocking out with STP. After they took their bows...everyone was screaming and just going on about how great the show was. Definately one of my top 3 of the year. Also, I bumped into Adam from Softdrive Records and said thanks for all he's done for us this year. Here are just a few of the pics I got - I should have more up next week when I return home: http://www.kodakgallery.com/ShareLanding.action?c=3jsiw...hw8qc&localeid=en_US See ya in Vegas!!!

Awesome review, Dion! Great pictures, as usual. Have a blast at the Vegas show tonight!!
Steve and my other friends who are going don't have general admission, so you may not "bump" into them. With you guys all there, I hope they slip a different song or two into the set tonight, that would be the best! |
