I don't know if this has been asked before but...

I was talking to Nova/TaintedEpiphany/Kyle trying to figure out what the hell Aaron is doing before he sings Excess Baggage.

We have come up with the following:

He walks into the room, grabs a glass and sets it on something. A table could quite possibly be a logical answer. Then, he proceeds to walk over, pick up his guitar, and goes and sits down while sighing. Then, he does something, makes a loud noise, takes a drink, and starts to play.


Here's what we came up with that he could be doing with that something that we're trying to figure out (Note: the ones that make no sense were most likely thought up by Kyle):

A.) Opening a wine bottle, then setting down the cork screw
B.) Opening a window
C.) Moving a stool
D.) Adjusting said stool
E.) Adjusting microphone
F.) Adjusting a stand of some sort
G.) Moving cord to guitar
H.) Something else, I have no idea.

I was thinking - perhaps it was he was somehow opening something to pour in his glass that he drinks just before starting to play - and he must have his guitar on his leg because he starts playing pretty fast afterwards. I don't think he'd have enough time to pour a drink, drink it, then start playing in the amount of time he does.

So what I want to know is - What do you think? Or do you know? Or... what the hell is that "clk, clk, clk KATINK" noise?!

He walks in a room
Goes to the frige gets a can of soda
Slams the glass on the table
"clk clk" opens the can and pours the soda

I can see that as plausible, but its too many 'clks' for an opening of a soda, and the "KATINK" sound doesn't exactly sound like the opening of a soda. It sounds more like something metal hitting a counter or table of sorts. Plus, he doesn't have enough time to pour the said soda in the glass. He drinks almost immediately after the "KATINK" hits and then he plays right after the slight drink.

Plus, I don't think he'd be drinking soda if he was going to sing... you'd think...

What you can't drink soda before singing? Maybe it was a bottle of water ya know one of those fancy bottles you need a bottle opener to open. That's the Clk the opener hitting the bottle. We had this topic 2 years ago I will try to find it and see what was said. I haven't listened to that song in ages. I'ma gonna put it on and listen.

Funny you brought this up, Erik. I've always been wondering what was going on, especially the loud ass KATINK

i am almost 100% positive that he is putting his cigarette out in an ashtray.

its simple
Aaron walks across a wooden floor with boots on
hence the heavy footsteps
hes obviously smoking something
hence the heavy exhaling
wherever he is theres no ashtray
hes using a coffee can in which he puts out whatever he's smoking
hence that low hollow thumping noise
the clank is him putting the coffe can on a table
he then grabs his drink and the glass bumbs against the coffee can
hence that loud clank

I was at one of his solo shows in Vegas at the Golden Nugget back in early 2005 and someone asked him this same question. I don't remember his EXACT answer, but he mentioned wine and a cigarette. I do remember him saying "Both of which I don't do anymore" at the end of his answer though. Hope that helps.
