Friday night at Verizon Wireless Music Center began with a mystery tied to the order of appearance of bands Daughtry and Staind.

It's true that the two-act undercard for the Nickelback concert wasn't advertised to unfold in a particular way.

But conventional wisdom might dictate the band that's issued a No. 1 album and a pair of Top 5 singles in the past year -- Daughtry -- would play after a band that's on a slow, dignified career decline (Staind).

While officials at the Noblesville amphitheater initially expected Staind to warm up for Daughtry, they reported the day-of-show switch as something the tour did at its own discretion.

Friday-afternoon traffic became an X factor in the program, as I-69 and at least one supposed "shortcut" to the venue were backed up for miles.

After singing his first number at 7:40 p.m., Daughtry vocalist Chris Daughtry told the nearly packed house that he and his bandmates had just arrived at Verizon.

What about audience members delayed on roads until 8:20 p.m. or later? They missed Daughtry and then caught a professional performance by Staind, one filled with thick, melancholy mainstream metal that made the Boston-based quartet popular around the turn of the century.

Regarding Daughtry's showing, it was funny to see the band's guitar technician work from a road case labeled "The All-American Rejects." Regardless of whether the emo-pop band from Oklahoma ever owned the case, few people have gone farther after being rejected from "American Idol" than former contestant Chris Daughtry.

Some of his singing on Friday clanged "pitchy" in the world of Randy Jackson, but Daughtry's voice is heroic in the context of derivative hard rock.

The North Carolina native wore distressed blue jeans, an olive-green sleeveless T-shirt, boots and a robust wallet chain.

He found some tuneful footing during a rendition of the ballad "What About Now," and a stripped-down version of Soundgarden's "Fell on Black Days" impressed as a soul-baring moment in a sea of highly orchestrated, lowest-common-denominator rock -- which brings us to the evening's headliner.

The members of Nickelback arrived onstage at 9:54 p.m., basically too late for an accurate summary written on deadline.

But thanks to the Canadian band's deep catalog of hits, the show's early moments included crowd favorites "Animals," "Photograph" and "Far Away."

Balls of fire and onstage fireworks wowed the sell-out audience of 24,000, a notable leap from the 7,000 or so who attended last summer's Nickelback show at Conseco Fieldhouse -- a bill that didn't include Daughtry.

first of all, Daughtry has opened at every single show of the tour, and if this person was a decent journalist they would've known that.

I was there and I can tell you that I personally was NOT impressed by Daughtry. I sort of just stood there in awe of their over-enthusiasm(sp?) and very poor wardrobe choices. I honestly felt that they were to loud and Chris acted like he was a famous enough rocker to rival Steven Tyler! Really...it was a lot of wasted energy on their part because they did not win me over as a fan. I left right after Staind and would have rather been caught dead...literally...than to have been seen supporting Chad and his gang of fellow fuck-ups. Whoever wrote that piece needs to have a rather large, oversized boot shoved completely up their ass, granted they can remove their head from there long enough to do so. Sorry...just my opinion.

(yeah me again) Thats was funny . but seriously though man, its true, i haven't been seening Staind much anywhere, you will see nickelBack,Linkin Park and all the other new guys and guys who really aren't that good compared to Staind. As we know Staiond music (Angry or not) Always carry profound meaning, this is what the other bands don't have much of. i don't like it on bit either but i can't help but think what she said was true. Staind seems to be on a decline, and their the best Rock band out there as far as i'm concerned.

I don't consider them to be on a decline. They aren't going anywhere. Yeah, they aren't as popular as they once were, but they are still touring almost all the time, unless they are in the studio working on a new record... How is that a decline?

I don't mean that the band themselves are producing less, i mean the populus have not been taking to them as there great music demands. It's only a relatively few fans of staind fans exist. But the ironic thing is, they are so good. (not bashing) but, linkin park got blown up for singing 2 min long songs. and they came out the same time Staind released the BTC album. (i bought them the same time) and well, whatever it sticks, Staind rocks, the others don't. Its confusing the music industry is at times.

I found these two quotes from an article from last year:

Okay, so the reporter was right...Since their last album went PLATINUM, not quadruple platinum like BTC did, I guess he didn't lie by saying they were on the decline.

But, that's like saying Billy Joel should open up for Clay Aiken. I mean, hasn't Billy been on the decline since 1980, when he released his biggest hit, 'It's Still Rock & Roll To Me.' He's released albums since then. None of which did anywhere near as well as the aforementioned. Ironic though, since the last show I saw Billy do last year in the Hartford Civic center (& I believe it was one of 5 consecutive nights), they announced that Billy had officially sold out more nights there than any other performer, and put up a banner bigger than my house up in the Civic Center that night to commemerate it. I mean, that IS something done for those on the decline, like Staind, right?!?
