Capital upset by rock star cursing

City council says Chad Koreger of Nickelback's use of f-word not in keeping with family event

The City of Charlottetown is describing the actions of platinum rockers Nickelback at this year’s Festival of Lights as “totally unacceptable” and at least one councillor is calling for the band to return with a ‘family-friendly’ concert to make amends.

Nickelback headlined this year’s Festival of Lights, as part of what organizers described as the largest Canada Day celebrations east of Ottawa. Also on the bill for the Canada Day weekend were Staind, Hedley, Finger Eleven, Buckcherry and Default — bands which Charlottetown city councillors said also didn’t fit with what was supposed to be a family-friendly Canada Day weekend.

“The number of e-mails I’ve got from visitors from off-Island, the number of phone calls I’ve gotten, the number of people who approached me on the street is just unbelievable,” Charlottetown Mayor Clifford Lee said.
“People were really, really disappointed and really upset.”

The acts included their share of adult language, particularly during the Nickelback concert where the ‘f-word’ was used throughout the performance. At one point, the band also rolled out a tableful of beer and started throwing it into the audience — in a section of the crowd that was not designated for alcohol and included teenagers and children under the legal drinking age.

Tourism Charlottetown, the organizers of the festival, emphasized the family theme of the weekend and asked the bands to watch their language but that didn’t happen.
Lee’s feelings were shared by most of the council at last night’s monthly council meeting.
Coun. Cecil Villard, a Nickelback fan, said he was “terribly disappointed” in the band’s language. He was at the Saturday night concert.
“The language was terrible and I understand the band the night before was even worse,” he said.
Coun. Mitchell Tweel said he wants Nickelback to come back to Charlottetown — for free — and provide a family-friendly concert to make amends.

“Maybe they didn’t fully understand the ramifications and the consequences,” he said.
But Coun. Rob Lantz said asking “a bad boy rock star to not use profanity is simply adding fuel to the fire.”
Lantz was at the concert and described it as ‘ridiculous.’ He said it was a mistake to ask the band here in the first place if the city is concerned about providing family entertainment.

“The man has been charged with drunk driving, I’ve heard him curse and swear on national TV, we should have been well aware of what we were getting ourselves into,” Lantz said.
Nobody from the Festival of Lights could be reached for comment Monday evening.
The Charlottetown mayor said city council owns the venue where the concerts took place, Confederation Landing Park, and provides more than a $100,000 in funding to Tourism Charlottetown, the organizers of the festival.
Lee said he’s prepared to pull his support for the concert unless it cleans up its act. He said he’d also like to see a clause in the performer’s contract that says they only get paid if there is no profanity in their acts.
“I honestly think, as a city, we have to step back and determine how we want to promote Charlottetown. Is that what we want people all across the world to think of Charlottetown?”
