Marisol,

Thank you for your efforts to comfort us following the cancellation of Matchbox 20 at Cheyenne Frontier Days (CFD). But I just can't seem to get my head around this decision. After my husband and I saw mb20 at the Broomfield event center in March I regretted not taking my two sons (ages 11 and 15). What a great band, music with heart and what a show! When I heard a few days after the Broomfield show that mb20 was going to open at CFD I had my chance to fulfill my dream (taking my boys to see mb20). On Saturday when tickets went on sale, I sat at my computer and I counted down the seconds to buy (6) tickets to Mb20 to surprise my family. It paid off when I ended up getting front row tickets!! I danced around the house for days giggling and jamming to mb20, because I knew I had purchased the best tickets to see our favorite band ever! I never in my life had front row tickets! I gave my sons two tickets each for their spring birthdays allowing them to each bring friend.

I am originally from California, have been living in Fort Collins Colorado for the last 20 years and have never been to CFD. I purchased these tickets only to see mb20 and not any of the other events. I’m not a person who actively speaks out in opposition to the rodeo events but I simply choose not to support them by attending. Although I’m disappointed in your decision, I respect your convictions.

On April 10th, the day of my son’s 16th birthday, the news hit our newspaper that mb20 was canceling their CFD appearance I couldn’t believe it. Now I had to tell all of them that our tickets were no longer valid and we would not be going. It was the hardest thing to do. They seemed ok with it primarily because they knew by the look on my face and my puffy eyes that I was upset enough for all of them. They ended up comforting me instead of me comforting them. And now here I am four days later and I’m still upset, I can't seem to get over it!

Marisol – would it be possible for you to make this up to our family and get us front row tickets to the next show mb20 plays in Colorado?

Marisol,
I am so so so sad to see that MB20 will not be playing in Cheyenne. I have lived in Cheyenne for the past eight years but have NEVER attended a rodeo during Frontier Days. However, I am a huge fan of Matchbox 20 and Rob in his solo career. We bought tickets right away, along with many many other fans here in Cheyenne. My husband, friends and I do not support cruelty to animals but we DO support great music, including Matchbox 20. We are long time fans and would like to suggest that MB20 figure out a way to come through this area that is not associated with Frontier Days. I know many people who would be over joyed to purchase tickets AGAIN. I understand your position in regards to the animals and I wouldn't expect you to support the rodeo. We just want to see a great concert! Please talk to Rob about coming to see his MANY fans in Cheyenne.

Are you f'ing serious? How incredibly self centered of you!

Why don't you use this as a teaching experience for your boys instead of crying boo-hoo over it? Show them pictures of animals being horribly abused for sport and tell them that THIS is why Matchbox Twenty canceled their show. I'm sure if you've taught them right they will understand.

Time to get over it.

I'm sorry that You" are disappointed with the cancellation of the MB20 concert. I have adult children who are out in the world, and both have a passion for MB20, and they were the ones that turned me on to them. But, sometimes there are things bigger in the world more important than a concert, like perhaps the prevention of cruel suffering? Not attending the rodeo is a nice touch, but it is still going to happen. EndEndless suffering, pain and the animals have no voice to say..."STOP...YOUR HURTING ME." Consider the following:
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
~Animal Rights & Welfare
~Animal Rights & Welfare
~People have to understand that the commandment, "Do unto others as you would do unto you" applies to animals, plants and things, as well as to people! and that if it is regarded as applying only to people..then the animals, plants and things will, in one way or another, do as badly by man as man has done by them.... - Aldous Huxley
~James Herriot on
Animal Protection
I wish people would realize that animals are totally dependent on us, helpless, like children, a trust that is put upon us... I could do terrible things to people who dump unwanted animals by the roadside. - James Herriot in a television interview
I hope to make people realise how totally helpless animals are, how dependent on us, trusting as a child must be that we will be kind and take care of their needs...[They] are an obligation put on us, a responsibility we have no right to neglect, or violate by cruelty.
I have felt cats rubbing their faces against mine and touching my cheek with claws carefully sheathed. These things, to me, are expressions of love.
If a farmer calls me with a sick animal, he couldn't care less if I were George Bernard Shaw. - James Herriot on continuing his Veterinarian practice after becoming a best-selling author
~~ Kylli Koski on Animal Protection ~
Nothing justifies a cruel treatment of animals. Yet, constantly inconceivable cases of cruelty to animals are happening all the time. It's completely inexcusable to mistreat animals in order to entertain people, like in bullfights or cockfights.
I understand that in some cases you can defend animal experiments, but laboratory animals experience even unnecessary suffering. In factory farming, in piggeries, in poultry farms and mink farms it's often forgotten that animals are living creatures and must be treated well. Animals are kept in very tight cages without an opportunity to move freely about. How far back are those times when domestic fowl could freely waddle around in the courtyard.
In TV shows and elsewhere I have tried to spread information about cats people take just for a summer time. Unfortunately year after year kittens are abandoned when the fall arrives. Children should be taught from the beginning to treat animals with responsibility. If a family takes an animal, a cat, a dog, a hamster or any other pet it must be taken care of the animal for all of its life. An animal must never be left to the forest or by the roadside when taking care of it no longer appeals. If the family can't take care of their pet, they must find a new home for it or let a veterinary to put it to sleep. You must never cause unnecessary suffering to animals.
~Our Duty to Animals
There is no reason why our domestic animals should not be trained to help man, and to work in his service, so long as the work is not painful or excessive. But all the creatures around us should be trained in the way best for themselves; that is to say, we should always remember that their evolution is the object of the divine Will. So that while we should surely teach our animals all that we can because that develops their intelligence, we must take care that we instill into them good qualities and not evil.
We must see that we do not increase in our animal the ferocious qualities which it is the business of his evolution to get rid of. For example, a man who trains a dog to hunt and kill is intensifying within him the very instincts which must be eliminated if the animal is to evolve, and in this way he is degrading a creature given into his charge instead of helping him on his way ... The same thing is true of a man who trains his dog to be ferocious in order that he may be an efficient protector of his property.
Mankind has for so long treated animals cruelly that the whole animal world has a general feeling of fear and enmity towards men. Men have generated, in this way, an awful karma which comes back upon them in terrible suffering, in various forms of disease and of insanity. Yet, even after all this bad behavior on the part of man, few animals will harm him if let alone.
Charles W. Leadbeater, "Our duty to Animals" in The Inner Life
~Albert Schweitzer on Animal Welfare
It is man's sympathy with all creatures that first makes him truly a man.
That's my private ant. You're liable to break its legs. - Albert Schweitzer to a ten-year-old boy
We must fight against the spirit of unconscious cruelty with which we treat the animals. Animals suffer as much as we do. True humanity does not allow us to impose such sufferings on them. It is our duty to make the whole world recognize it.
Anyone who has accustomed himself to regard the life of any living creature as worthless is in danger of arriving also at the idea of worthless human lives.
Whenever an animal is forced into the service of men, everyone of us must be concerned for any suffering it bears on that account. No one of us may permit any preventable pain to be inflicted, even though he would be interfering in something that does not concern him. No one may shut his eyes and think the pain, which is therefore not visible to him is non-existent - Dr. Albert Schweitzer
~Albert Schweitzer's Prayers
The chief cause of pain to me wass the knowledge of the untold sufferings of animals. ... it seemed to be incredible - this was even before I was old enough to go to school - that I should include only human beings in my evening prayers. So when my mother had heard my prayers and kissed me good-night, I said secretly another prayer, which I had composed myself, for all living creatures: "Dear God, protect and bless all creatures that have breath; save them from all evil and let them sleep in peace and quietness." - Albert Schweitzer
~A PRAYER FOR ANIMALS by Albert Schweitzer:
Hear our humble prayer, O God,
for our friends the animals,
especially for animals who are suffering;
for any that are hunted or lost or deserted
or frightened or hungry;
for all that must be put to death.
We entreat for them all Thy mercy and pity,
and for those who deal with them
we ask a heart of compassion and gentle hands and kindly words.
Make us, ourselves, to be true friends to animals
and so to share the blessings of the merciful.
I just want all animals to live free of cruelty and violence. All animals deserve the right to live without suffering or the means to an end for humans. Animals existed on this planet far longer than humans...we just srew it up...
Hi Mari,
I really appreciate you taking the time to update us. I support you and Rob 100%. Smiler
One of the reasons that I love MB20/Rob so much is that you guys stand behind your beliefs. That is rare in today's world.
Here is an article from the 4/15/08 Wyoming Tribune-Eagle regarding the Matchbox Twenty / Cheyenne Frontier Days cancellation.
"Animal rights group descends upon Cheyenne"
http://www.wyomingnews.com/articles/2008/04/15/news/20local_04-15-08.txt
The major national media should pay attention to the plight of the rodeo animals.
Once again, thanks to Rob, Marisol and Matchbox Twenty for their animal rights convictions.
Mari-
Thank you from the bottom of my heart for putting animals first! This was certainly a difficut stand to take, but know that your decision was a winning decision for all involved, and you are admired and loved by supporters all over the world.
What the world needs is more people such as yourself...to not go through life with blinders on, but to recognize when things are wrong and stand up and say so!!
Stay the course...we will win this fight!!
Hi Marisol,
I live in Australia so would not be affected by the cancellation of this show from a fan's point. However I just wanted to say I admire what you and Rob are doing. I cannot believe in these times that animal crueity still goes on, I know I shouldn't be shocked but I am. I feel so proud that I am a fan of people who care about others, not only other people but animals as strongly as you guys do. And I feel you have all handled this situation with class and dignity.
And I like you would rather do the right thing than be popular, as far as I'm concerned your all wonderful and thank you for standing up for those that can't do it for themselves.
Thanks Kate
I am so dissapointed in your gullability. Animal rights harms more animals than it helps. Do your research. Animal welfare is what truly benefits animals and is highly practiced by the sport of professional rodeo; they care for their animals more than most care for their children.
SHARK is a one man show- an insane man at that and I am shocked and appauled that he so easily pursuaded you. The injury rate for rodeo is less than .001%.
I know one fan might be small- but you have lost this one.
Did you shun Ty Murray when you toured with Jewel? Isn't the mear presence of her on the same stage somewhat hypocrytical?
You can love Animals and Rodeo
Hi Marisol
I applaud you, Rob and the band on an admirable and difficult decision. You cannot please everyone all of the time, as long as you remain true to yourself and your beliefs, true fans will understand and respect this decision. Thank you for the work you're both doing for our animals and devoting time in raising awareness for a very important cause.
Also, thanks to Rob and the guys for a truly amazing concert last Tuesday. I live in Perth Australia, the most isolated city in the world. You graced our shores and gave us an unforgettable show that had everyone begging for more...thank you for giving us your time and including Perth in the tour. Looking forward to you coming back, can't come soon enough!
Sharon
Rob and Marisol,
Thank you for making a stand and showing others in this country that animal abuse is not acceptable.
Do not worry about those who do not agree with your decision. Your true fans stand behind you 100%.
I would have gone to your show in Cheyenne, however, because you are not going to be there, I will just find your nearest performance and travel there. You guys are worth the trip.
I used to be a fan of Matchbox Twenty, now I am a thousand times more impressed with your music and strength.
Keep up your work to save animals and people in need!
Your fan forever !!
WOW!!!! I had to sign up just to respond to some of the opinions on this board.
I think all of us (or most of us) on MB20 board and R.T./SidewalkAngel board are compassionate people who have the right intentions. I read what the fan from Colorado said and understand her DISSAPOINTMENT in the decision. She got GREAT seats that included her kids and I know how sad it is because that is exactly what happened to me. The only difference is that her kids are older so probably it was much more important for her to share Matchbox Magic with them.....if my kids were that age I would have SOBBED!!! So let's be kind here and understand where this human being is coming from..........she is NOT SELFISH. She just want to share a great experience. Having said that, the REASON MB20 canceled is one of the many reasons I love them. Passion for what they believe in and what they love......relief when , for the most part they could be in charge of their career. So to another fellow Coloradoan who was there at the Broomfield show I have to say my thoughts are with you and I DON'T think you are wrong for feeling the way you feel. I showed my girls the video and the oldest cried watching it.she told everyone at her elementary school in BVSD (Boulder). We lost out on a GREAT concert but we gained a GREAT LESSON!!!!!! MB20 will be back in Broomfield......they know they are loved here... anyways that is all.......there should be NO division here.....sadness yes.........but we got all our money back for tickets and we know they did it for the right reasons. Peace and Understanding........a Family from Colorado that had great seats and lost out on those also......but we sold our hotel room and rodeo tickets will be sold soon and we will NEVER go to a rodeo.
