Wasn't too sure of which forum to post this in, but.. as I'm sure not many know, if any at all.. I'm an artist, and I'm eventually going to do a project that is somehow Shinedown-related. First thing I'm probably going to do is a portrait of Brent. Problem is, as usual, I'm having a hard time deciding on exactly which photo of him I'd like to use as reference. Thought this would be a nice place for opinions. Yes, a bit indecisive here, I suppose. Hah. So, I've a few potential reference ideas already. Firstly, which one out of these do you think would be appropriate for the portrait?

There's obviously a bit of a problem with the last one as the photo's cut at the top.

But if you have a photo that you think would be better fitting than one of those, share! Any suggestions would be great, and welcome. As I do with every project, I'm trying to get the widest perspective possible before I commit to a final choice. Doesn't even necessarily have to be Brent or Shinedown-related if you have any ideas to share! Anything or anyone you could imagine being a subject of art. Open to all.

Whatever I decide to use, I'll be sure to post and share it once the drawing is done, even though that kind of ruins the surprise. Haha. Any thoughts are appreciated. Thanks!

Out of the 3, I'd say the second one as well. Although, if color is thrown into the first one I'd go with that one.

Thank you all.

Color won't be thrown in at all, it'll be done in graphite pencils. So, color's not a concern. The second one, Brent's hands and whatnot are sort of part of the photo and the concept, and if you take that out, which I would have to do because of size of paper, and placement, proportion, etc., you can't really tell what the subject is supposed to be. It fucks with the whole subject to remove them. So, say, imagining the photo is cut where his hands begin, removing them and everything in the photo below them from the piece. It'll almost look like he's sleeping or something of that nature .

Last one's pretty much out, then. So, the first one doesn't have many apparent problems, except that I wish the photo had simply more of, well, the photo on the left side as the subject slightly looks off balance and awkward, therefore the drawing will, too, if I don't find a way to correct it.

So, first or second. You know, I'll probably end up doing a painting or something with the photo I don't use for this.. considering I can use all of the photo, and shit, maybe I'll even sell it if it's deemed good enough. And, come to think of it, I think the second one would be more appropriate for such.

I personally would pick #2. But, if you have to cut his hands from it, then I'd go with the first one.

Since you asked, I don't like any of them. None of them portray Brent's personality. IMHO, if u r gonna use him in a work of art, at least try to capture his essence, his ka, his soul.
If you'd do a little search of the past pix posted on this board, I think you'll find way better examples of this man's charismatic nature.

I agree with you, Donna. You said it better than I could though. I wasn't sure how to put it but you managed to do it.
There are far better photos than those three. If those are your favorites, go with what you like. They all just feel strange to me.
