I have "Leave A Whisper", and have listened to "The Sound Of Madness" several times.

"Leave A Whisper" is pretty good.

"The Sound Of Madness" is good too, but I usually prefer heavier songs. Still, each song on that album is well constructed. "Second Chance" might be my favorite song by them.

How is "Us And Them"? What type of songs are on the album? Is it a little heavier than "The Sound Of Madness"? How is the consistency?

All three of shinedowns albums are different, first one was the post grunge feel, then simpleman came out and they more of less became more a southern rock band, and it really shows on Us and Them. Its not overproduced, and some what raw, and has alot of catchy songs, focuses on the band.

Its hard to say its heavier, its got Heroes? and a few others with alot of grit, my favorite being begin again. But honestly its more soulful if anything. Or the word i used being raw.

Check it out, go on youtube and take a listen to the album! or buy it!

I like to call Us and Them, Shinedown's "trippy" album. How is it trippy? Well from the moment you pop the CD into the player, you'll notice. I don't know if you haven't heard this CD yet, but The Dream is definitely not what you would expect. And songs like Lady So Divine (and if you go deluxe the Save Me Pull Mix) and Beyond the Sun are very, for lack of a better word, spiritual. You'll hear SD's best solo (LSD), best bass line (Save Me) and possibly two of Shinedown's best ballads in Shed Some Light and Beyond the Sun (even though its a cover).

In terms of "heaviness" its not as heavy as some of the tunes on SOM. But its close, the heaviest have to be Begin Again and Yer Majesty. And in terms of consistency I measure these songs to be some of Shinedown's greatest:

Save Me
I Dare You
Heroes
Beyond the Sun
Shed Some Light

those three are on us and them...

personally, UaT is my least favorite. if i'm completely honest, i was disappointed the first time i listened to it after the epicness of LaW. which is not to say it isn't good, but it had to grow on me a little.

Well, to go along with what some people have been saying, "Us and Them" goes a slightly different direction.

It is definitely more focused on the vocals than the sheer band sound like "Leave a Whisper". As well, it isn't as finely tuned and produced like "Sound of Madness" is.

But, I dare say, that "Us and Them" has some of the best lyrical content out of the trio. It's not as edgy as the other two albums, and it maybe more of a "Mainstream" sound, but the lyrics alone are fantastic.

Real gems on the album are "Save Me", "Heroes", "Some Day" (Which I always felt like could have made it BIG on the airwaves), "I Dare You", "Shed some Light" and "Trade Yourself In."

If you do get the album, buy the Special Edition on iTunes and check out the bonus tracks. Listen to how "Atmosphere" could have been. It is very interesting to hear the demo compared to the kind of plain version on the album.

Finally, as I am a completist, buy the Shinedown EP on iTunes and get "Break." Should have been on the album. It is terrific. And, try to find "Carried Away." Both are bonus tracks that add a whole new appreciation to "Us and Them" and really make it something special.

Hope this helps! It's a great album and it's been a heck of a trilogy so far.

Us and Them is possibly my favourite album. The stripped down, retero, raw, swagger... it's just brilliant. Such a fantastic airtight groove, wrapped around wonderful lyrics all the way through. Smiler

Fantastic album, which seems sadly forgotten between LAW and SOM. Frowner

Listen to this person! First go buy the Shinedown EP (Break, Save Me Pull Mix and Acoustic versions, and acoustic I Dare You), this will cost you $3.49 on iTunes. Then go to Amazon.com (its cheaper) and buy the $9.99 standard Us and Them, then go to the deluxe and buy the 9 tracks you don't already have thanks to the EP and it'll run you $18.90 - rather than spend the $18.99 on the deluxe version, which would be easier but than you are downloading duplicates which I can't stand - This way you save 9 cents! Don't spend it all in one place!). If you did this correctly you should have all 25 Deluxe and Standard Us and Them tracks and Break (and no duplicates)!

I love the demo version of Atmosphere.
And Break. That is a great song.

Honestly the only songs I don't "care for" are lacerated and lady so divine.

I thought I had notifications turned on, but I guess not.

Thanks for the responses.

Now I have a better idea of what to expect.

I think I'll get the Shinedown EP (which I didn't know about before), Us and Them regular, and the demo version of "Atmosphere".
