Hey everyone. I was wondering what I shoudl do.
All my life I've really wanted a talent and I ahven't seemed to have found "it" yet. This past summer, seeing my boyfriend be the greatest piano player I've ever met, and lots of my friend's love instruments, I really wanted to take up an instrument. In fact, this has always been an interest of mine. Theres two problems though. The first problem is this, what instrument? The two that come to mind are piano and guitar. my boyfriend could teach me piano.. but I really don't think Id enjoy playing piano. I enjoy him playing it for me more. Then I was thinking guitar. I would actually really love to play guitar. I think it would be so much fun. But thats the problem. SOOO many people I know play guitar. I feel like no one would care and if they did care they would just think I'm being a poser or something. I really would love to play guitar though.
The second problem is the money issue. Firstly, how would I learn? Probably by taking lessons right? But I dont have that kind of money. im currently looking for a job and not having very much luck and my parents.. THat's a whole other story. They wouldn't want to or be able to give me the kind fo money I'd need for lessons every week or whatever. Then theres actually GETTING the instrument. That costs alot of money too. My boyfriend's sister bought an amp and a guitar and that was 900. Theres NO way I could EVER get that much money from my parents, soon, or from a job quickly.
Do you guys have any advice. What do you think I should do? I really want your help so please post!! Thanks.

First of all, it's great that you have such a desire to try something new! Secound, learning guitar is alot of fun, you'll probally enjoy it, but I can see your dilema. Well, if anyone thinks your a poser for playing guitar , or wanting to play, you just have to blow them out of the water and show them you have potential. IF you've never played an instrument before, you should start with something simple like the guitar or piano.PLying guitar opens alot of oppurtunities, even if your just a bneginner, you can still play in small grps or bands. LIke with me, I had just been playing 6months when i fell into a worship band.

As for the lessons, I would start a bit on your own, just learning the basic chords, then take lessons. Also, I would start out with a cheap guitar, you can find some on ebay for as low as $90. Then, if you excell, get a new one...

Hope i helped

There's no such thing as a poser. That's made up by snobs who think they're the only one who can do what they do.

Learning guitar is an easy and fun activity, especially if you love writing music, it accompanies it quite well.

www.musiciansfriend.com

If you go there you can get starter packs (Guitar, amp, strap, book or Video or DVD, electric tuner, picks) for only 100! go for it, it's a great deal. I'd recomend a Squier to start with!!

Don't stress if you can't afford guitar lessons. I have a bunch of friends who took lessons, and I'm better than they are from teaching myself. There are a TON of good websites that can teach you a lot!

As for buying a guitar...the others are right, you can get some really good deals. If you're playing acoustic, you don't need an amp. I'd recommend learning on acoustic over electric, also - because although electric is easier to play, if you learn on electric and then try to switch to acoustic, it can be REALLY difficult!! But switching from acoustic to electric is really easy. I always recommend Alvarez guitars to everyone. They look good, sound great, and the regular acoustics are very affordable. http://www.alvarezgtr.com

I agree...sometimes lessons are not necessary....play by ear...you would be amazed what you can figure out on your own by watching other guitar players and learning basic chords...there are books available probably can check out the library for info for free info on guitar basics and chords and books and get a cheap guitar from a yard sale or flea market or somewhere locally...yahoo has a site in Chicago and maybe elsewhere where you offer something for free instead of throwing it away that someone else can use and you can't anymore and then you can ask for stuff you need and people are out there that might have an old guitar laying around they don't need...you may even get one for free...keep me posted...hope you have luck getting one dirt cheap or free even...your pal, fellow Ry fan, Pam
