Awwwwwwww Mari, this just is so awful. How can a judge do that???? It just blows my mind, I am so angry!! I am going to log on to the website and see how I can help out in this situation.

Here is something I got in a e-mail, thought I would pass it on:

A PET'S TEN COMMANDMENTS.........

Remember that they can't do a lot of things for themselves and that they depend on you to make their life a quality life!

1. My life is likely to last 10-15 years. Any separation from you is likely to be painful.
2. Give me time to understand what you want of me.
3. Place your trust in me. It is crucial for my well-being.
4. Don't be angry with me for long and don't lock me up as punishment. You have your work, your friends, your entertainment, but I have only you.
5. Talk to me. Even if I don't understand your words, I do understand your voice when speaking to me.
6. Be aware that however you treat me, I will never forget it.
7. Before you hit me, before you strike me, remember that I could hurt you, and yet, I choose not to bite you.
8. Before you scold me for being lazy or uncooperative, ask yourself if something might be bothering me. Perhaps I'm not getting the right food, I have been in the sun too long, or my heart might be getting old or weak.
9. Please take care of me when I grow old. You too, will grow old.
10. On the ultimate difficult journey, go with me please. Never say you can't bear to watch. Don't make me face this alone. Everything is easier for me if you are there, because I love you so.

Take a moment today to thank God for your pets. Enjoy and take good care of them.

Life would be a much duller, less joyful experience without God's critters. We do not have to wait for Heaven, to be surrounded by hope, love, and joyfulness. It is here on earth and has four legs

Thank you "G" for the wonderful siggy and thank you G and Shellybelly for the use of your pictures!!

Mari, thanks so much for posting and giving us more information about this horrible situation. When I first read about this story, I was sickened by the cruelty of some people and the lack of compassion by the judge. Thank you so much for fighting for those who can't fight for themselves. Pets Alive is a wonderful place that does wonderful things and as I have in the past, will do whatever I can to help!

Much love,

Karen

Thanks for the update, Mari. I get so frustrated when things like this happen, but as someone said, if we all work together - perhaps we can make a change. I read another post about this last night and also got an email. I will forward this information to all my clients in my pet-sitting service. Also, my friend works at a horse-spa nearby and I will ask her to spread the word.

Marisol - you have such a good heart. Unfortunately, this scenario somewhat mirrors what happens to a lot of children in this country when they are returned to parents and homes from which they should be protected.

Just recently in my area animal rescue workers went to a piece of land where they rescued approximately 380 animals - cats, dogs, goats, pigs, sheep, cows, ducks, chickens and I believe a couple of emus. The animals were living in filth and severely malnourished. And to top that off, she had six children living with her as well in a series of filthy trailers. The children and the animals were placed in the care of others and her petitions to the court for their return have so far gone ungranted. She's been trying like hell to get them all back, but her pleas are falling on deaf ears. Much like this woman who had Carrie and Baxter she considers those animals her "property".

Many of the animals were so malnourished and disease-ridden that the "kindest" thing for them was to end their suffering. The others have been placed in shelters all around this area and will be available for adoption once they are back to good. One of the videos I saw still brings tears to my eyes. A small, brown, wirey-haired puppy whose ribs and leg bones you could see was gingerly picked up by a rescue worker who placed the pup against her chest with its head near her shoulder. The camera focused in on the pup's face who seemed confused at first, but then you could see it totally relax and you could see the shift in its eyes as it felt the love from this worker. The pup laid its head on the worker's shoulder, gave a long sigh, closed its eyes and just seemed to melt into this woman. It broke my heart.

Thanks to you and Rob for helping out Pets Alive so generously over the years. I know they appreciate it so much as do the animals. I've seen photos and videos over the years of Rob and you with Buddy the Cow and I have no doubts Buddy knows the depth of your love for all animals.

Where's the justice, you ask. I honestly don't know. I wish I could help all hurting and neglected animals, but I know I can't, so I do what I can.

Much love to you and Rob,
Tammy Smiler
xoxo

I am absolutely flummoxed as to how this is allowed to happen. Obviously these people had been given ample opprtunity to rectify the situation on their farm. How many chances do people get? And why weren't they fined? I do not know what the legislation is for matters of neglect in the US but surely there would be something that could protect the animals in this situation.

Thank you Mari for venting Smilerand sharing more information. Have read Angela's post from the other day first and hope it will all work out. Will head over to the Pet's Alive site to see what I can do.

Wow. I had no idea it was that bad. Your story made me tear up so bad, while I am work none the less...

I will do all that I can. I can not understand why the courts would let her have any animals back. Why isn't she in jail? Fined? Something? And then to expect to get paid for someone else to care for them. I do not understand people sometimes.

Thank you Mari for sharing this story, please feel free to vent at every opportunity. Thank you for all that you and Rob do for this world and the creatures in it! We love you for it.

Amazing siggy by Gudrun, a million thanks.

I will never understand why a person who does not want or cannot afford to care for an animal doesn't make an effort to find someone who will/can. What kind of people would rent an obviously sickly horse for trail riding or whatever this nutball was doing with these horses. Two women, no less, aren't we supposed to be the more compassionate ones? Thank God they didn't have the money upfront to buy the horses back right away.

Thank you to you and Rob for helping these and all the other little critters! I am looking forward to the show at Foxwoods! Smiler

Frowner That is so sad. It makes me so mad that people can get away with mistreating animals. The people at Pets Alive are saints for doing everything possible to keep these two horses away from her. I really hope that karma will come back to get her.

Thanks so much for posting and keeping us updated on this terrible situation. You are a wonderful person with a beautiful heart. We love you.

I'm extremely disturbed by these kinds of situations. I live in a state where we have extremely good laws on animal protection.

Pasado's Law includes abuse, starving, dehydrating, or suffocating and it is considered a felony in my state and they are prosecuted under these laws and not ignored.

But even here we have a long way to go. My hope would be that more states will take on similar laws. Pasado's Safe Haven will help organize to get these laws in other states you only need to email them at ritamo@pasadosafehaven.org Smiler

Animals have a right to not suffer.

Thanks for posting Mari

Thanks so much for helping Mari. What makes me sick to my stomach is that she basically gets away with such neglect, and then to top it off, she makes $$ in the long run. That judge ought to be put out to pasture at her farm and rot in the feces himself Mad

These days, that's true about all manners of justice...

I truly hope these horses get the love and care they deserve, Mari.

Thanks for posting about it.

If you have a moment: My sister-in-law is involved with a no-kill animal shelter in North Carolina. They've done a lot of good. Unfortunately, they have lost a major portion of their funding and are being forced to close.

Suggestions, please?

Marisol...Rob has always had a piece of my heart...first, for his talent and the words that touch my heart...and secondly, for his kindness, and genuine sincerity. And now, you have a piece of my heart, too, after reading your post...YOUR kindness and sincerity is also apparent....While I have had the opportunity through Sidewalk Angels and Sweet Relief to meet and talk with Rob, I have not yet had the opportunity to meet you...hopefully, I WILL have that opportunity in October...until then, take care...I'll keep helping you and Rob help Pets Alive in every way I can....
