Once again Pets Alive has done an amazing job of saving helpless animals. This is from their website:
"On Friday, Pets Alive, working together with Best Friends Animal Society and W.A.R., rescued 120 beagles from an animal testing lab that had gone bankrupt. Beagles are often used in testing labs because of their calm and accepting demeanor. They would have spent their entire lives being tested on, and then disposed of when no longer of value. We heard that when the company, AniClin, went out of business, they left, closing and locking the doors with 120 beagles and 55 primates still inside. Previous caretakers scaled the fences and got in to help the animals, then requested help. W.A.R. stepped up, got Best Friends involved, who then contacted us and asked if we could help. For days at Pets Alive we prepared, setting up fencing, hiring additional staff, preparing an area to receive them and getting volunteers ready. We were delayed as the previous owner filed a court motion to stop the beagles from being "given away for free" and wanted to try to sell t hem to another lab. A judge ruled in our favor on Wednesday, making it possible for us all to spring back into action and go and fetch the dogs. It was a very long day for volunteers, and staff as we had six van or truckload's of crates and staff to help load the beagles. Best Friends sent staff here to help with the situation as well and W.A.R showed up and spent all day helping us get them beagles to safety. When we arrived back at Pets Alive we were met with dozens of volunteers who had decked the entire place out in red, white and blue - Independence Day for these 120 beagles. 30 beagles were whisked away by St. Hubert's Animal Shelter, where they will be vetted, cared for and adopted out from their facility. It was truly a wonderful day to watch as these beagles for the first time, put their feet on grass, looked up at the sun, and met another dog and started to try to play. It was tearful and gut wrenching and beautiful. Thank you to all the staff and all the volunteers that showed up to help. You guys are simply astounding and we love you. " If you go to their website you can "name" one of the beagles for a $25 donation. There is also a video link on the website. thanks to G and Ang for my sig "i will slide sideways through the pearly gates with a drink in one hand and a cigarette in the other..." |
