I'm going to get it. I work with 3-5 year olds every day, and ones who have families with high risk behaviors/travelling etc. So, I need it.

I got my seasonal one already and have had the pneumonia shot as well a couple years ago now.

Hi Farrah!
I'm still unsure about what to do. I got the swine flu back in September but thankfully my hubby & 2 boys avoided it. I heard that even people who have gotten it should still get the shot. I'm leary though. Especially for my boys. It kind of freaks me out thinking how quickly they came up with something and all the pressure, etc from everyone. I'd almost rather wait a bit and see if there are any side affects before having my kids get it but then again I don't want them to get really sick either. It's tough. Everything I read has great information to back up either side so its a toss up.

Nope.
The school was giving it free to the kids, was going to let Cole get it and we changed our minds.

Just wanted to come back and say that I have since been able to get my boys the shot.(After calling around everywhere) Ages 17 & 20. They have had no problems with it.

Thanks for that I had no clue about it.

After going back and forth about this we have decided against it.

I stoped by a herbal store the otherday and stocked up on elderberry extract, and vitamin D suppliments.
I have been giving my sons a teaspoon of honey everyday, as well as the elderberry, and a multivitamin...I am trying to boost our immunity system and prevent the flu with out getting the vaccination.

I have also found that garlic, broccoli, and apple cider vinager helps boost immunity.

Wow! This thread totally took me by surprise! I can't believe how many people here are dead set against it.

I got mine last week, and am thankful for the opportunity to get it. I've never been afraid of the flu, and I'm not afraid of the H1N1 flu either. However....

I'm a diabetic. High Risk. I am approaching end stage renal disease. High Risk. My daughter is 8 months pregnant. Higher Risk. I will have a granddaughter born during the most dangerous flu season in recent years. Highest risk.

I caught a common cold once. No big deal. 2 days later, my elderly mother caught it. 2 days after that, she died. A cold that was a minor annoyance to me became life threatening for her, because she had a long history of congestive heart failure.

Lesson learned. No way would I risk getting infected with the H1N1 virus, and possibly passing it on to my daughter or grand-daughter. Not as long as there is ANY possibility that the vaccine might help me not to get infected. Risk vs Benefit???? No brainer, to me.

The "other grandmother" is refusing to get the vaccine. Does she really think her risk from the vaccine trumps a newborn baby's risk from the virus???? I just don't get it....

Many more lives are lost from illnesses for which vaccines have been developed, than from those vaccines themselves. Aren't they? Doesn't that MEAN that benefits outweigh risks?

I got both shots, too. And mostly because they aren't giving them to my mother's age group. The elderly are most likely to die from the flu, but aren't on the lists to get the H1N1 vaccine. The best way to protect them is to not carry it in. And we are huggers...
The doctor I work for has a newborn, as does my partner at work. He wasn't real thrilled with the idea of them rushing the vaccine (not due to danger, but it may be less effective), but he asked us all to get it to avoid risking the babies or other babies we care for (he does a lot of newborns in his practice). We still have to wash up and be careful, and that can be pretty effective on it's own. I'm more likely to pass it from patient to patient than get it myself. I'm diabetic, too, although I'm controlling with diet at this time. More worried about the asthma kicking in bad with this virus. That, and I'm the sole worker in our home right now, can't take the risk of missing work.
Congrats on the grandbaby, and try not to worry too much. They are pretty tough, AND you can buy LOTS Of Lysol and alcohol hand sanitizer, hose everybody down at the door. Wink Those little paper masks are very effective, too. Smiler
(You know I'm only half joking, right? )

I'm really on the fence about the whole flu/swine flu vaccines. My kids never had flu shots because I was lucky enough to be a full time mom therefore my kids weren't exposed to all the germs in daycare. I think the media are the ones putting fear into people.

My son received his shot today ( we were actually getting another vaccination at the time) but he is end stage renal failure and being assessed for placement on the transplant list.

I'm very sorry to hear that, how old is he? I will keep him in my prayers.

I think I said that I didn't get it, as it's in short supply here and I am not in a high risk group.

That being said, I now wish I would have because I honestly think I have it now. I have been bed ridden for the last 24 hours, can hardly function and have all the classic signs. Of course, with all the other shit going on in my life this is bad timing, hubby is out of town, I can't care for myself let alone my dogs and daughter.

I should go to the Dr. but yesterday morning I went to the walk in clinic and it was so packed I decided to go straight back home.
