Had my daughter (15 1/2) not already contracted the swine flu, I was going to get her vaccinated. She & I have gotten the seasonal flu vaccine every year for the past 6 or 7 years & have never had anything but sore arms from it. When I asked our doctor about the H1N1 vaccine, she said, "get it!" When I brought up the ongoing concern of it not being tested enough, she said that it's no less safe than the seasonal flu vaccine which changes a little bit every year to match the current strain going around.

Uh-huh...same here. Even my husband, who works in a hospital, will not take the vaccine. If it becomes mandatory for hospital employees, as it has in certain hospitals in NY, then we will have some legal intervention going on.

I am a nurse and work in a hospital and we have a pt or two with the swine flu, but nope, no H1N1 or the flu vaccine for me either. Two years ago they told us it was mandatory for all of us to have the flu vaccine, I refused, that is my right. Nothing was ever said about it. If they say H1N1 is mandatory, I too will have some legal interventions going on.
I've been working in a hospital/medical field for over 20 years and had the flu once.

Hubby has worked in hospitals and clinics for 33 years...he's had it once too, and that was maybe 25 years ago. He's very careful to gown, glove and mask, especially now.

I got the regular one, not sure about the swine flu one because to be honest, I think I have it now.

At least I feel like a swine, does that count?

The local health dept. came to my daughter's school today and I had them to give her the shot. I feel like the benefits outweigh the risks. If things turn bad with the flu, they are gone in days. All vaccines carry a risk even the seasonal one. The next shipment of vaccines won't be in until the middle of Nov. and it takes up to two weeks to build up some immunity and by then, it may be too late. The flu season is just now getting started, there are many months still left to go. It could get really bad before it's over with. I heard that more kids have died so far than with the whole flu season last year and it's very early on. I agonized over the decision because of the unknown but prayed very hard about it and am trusting in God that it will be o.k.

Well, my plans went awry. My husband took my son Tues. to get the shot, they had stopped for the day. He took him out early and went up, they were completely out, according to the sign.
I am really concerned because he has other respiratory problems that put him at higher risk for complications. He also can't afford to miss any school, he has a really hard time catching back up, and a few days can ruin a whole semester for him.
I don't believe in automatically immunizing, and I'm glad that there is a lot of discussion and questioning on this. It makes more information available and raises accountability if they know there is a lot of public scrutiny.
Good luck to all, shots or not, I wish us all health and happiness.

I'll definitely get the shot as soon as I can. I especially want my 20-something boys to get it, as they both tend to lean toward pneumonia when they get sick. No sense taking any chances!

While I can understand your nervousness, the flu vaccine is new every year because the influenza virus mutates and the strain that went around last year isn't necessarily the one doing the rounds this year. So the scientists make a flu vaccine specific for the strain(s) that is prolific that season. A few years ago it was Influenza A, this year it's H1N1, it'll be something different next year.

I will most likely not get it...I have 3 children...17, 14 and 9...and had really hoped the decision would be taken out of my hands by the government...I would hate to be the one that made the wrong decision and have something happen...

My 9 year old was sick 3 weeks ago...17 kids in her 4th grade class were out...I assumed it was the flu...and held off for 3 days before taking her to the doctor...I only took her then because she started coughing...a croupy cough...and i was so worried about the pnuemonia complication.

When I took her in...the said the were giving everyone the rapid test for the flu...that had flu like symptoms...she tested negative. I was told at the office that the fail rate on the rapid test was 30 to 50%. I don't know if she had it or not...2 weeks later she still has a cough...I received no medicine for her...they told me to give her honey for the cough...The rapid test was $130.00 of which my insurance only paid $60.00. The flu is big business...

She didn't have pnuemonia...and I was reminded that she had received the vaccine for 23 types of bacterial pnuemonia as part of her innoculations....

My doctor visit cost me $200.00...to be told she had "the crud"...

So I guess...if the shot is free...I will get if for them...at least that will save me the $130.00 per test if they get sick...if it is not free...I just don't know...
