Me too. I'm not in a high risk group, but I do come into contact with a LOT of people during the tax season. I've already been sick enough this year...

I got my H1N1 vaccine yesterday, seasonal flu a few weeks ago at the hospital where I work. I am a nurse, and work at two different facilities: one is a Dr's office where I lock myself in a small room with sick people all day, the other a long term psych facility where I have contact with compromised immune systems. I still have to be careful not to carry it on my hands or clothes, and we all have hand sanitizer EVERYWHERE this year.
Some info: The H1N1 nasal spray has live virus that has been altered so that it is not supposed to be able to reproduce. It is available to healthy, non pregnant people who are not in close contact with newborns or anyone who may be compromised.
The injectible vaccine is manufactured just like the seasonal flu vaccine, using dead virus that does not reproduce. So it should be just as safe. It DOES have FDA approval now, for whatever that is worth.
I have taken the flu shot for years and have never had more than a little tenderness at the injection site. I have had no side effects from the H1N1 injection. My son will be getting the H1N1 vaccine on Thursday at our local health dept. My husband and mother would, but they are not eligible. They are rationing it to the highest risk groups, selected by their rate of fatal outcomes: First, all 6 month to 4 yr olds. Second: 4-18 yr olds with a high risk diagnosis (asthma or other chronic respiratory disease, compromised immune system, etc). Third: pregnant women (injection only), Fourth: healthcare workers and anyone is close contact with infants. Notice that healthy adults are not on the list yet. They might be for the second round of deliveries. Kids have had a much higher death rate from H1N1, and they also bring it home to adults. Older (over 60) adults, most at risk for bad outcomes from seasonal flu are not the highest risk group because of a possible small amt of immunity from exposure to swine flu in the '50's.
We are completely out of seasonal flu vaccine at the clinics, hospitals, and health dept here because of high demand this year, and because they curtailed manufacture to concentrate on H1N1. We are hoping for more later in Nov or early Dec.
Many kids will get H1N1, cough and hack for a few days, run a fever, and get over it in about a week or so. But some, on the 3rd or 4th day, will develop severe respiratory distress. There is a high rate of pulmonary embolism with H1N1 (blood clots in the lungs), and a 'ground glass' kind of effect in the lungs. There does not seem to be rhyme or reason frequently to those who go bad, except having other respiratory problems.
Follow your gut, but obviously I feel the possible benefits out-weigh the risks. I research everything to death, and question everything. I respect anyone's right to do the same.
Hope this long-a@@ post was of a little help!
Wink

Good luck with everything, and have fun at Disney!
Smiles,
Mel

I got the pneumonia vaccination a couple of years ago because my allergies sometimes lead to asthmatic bronchitis.

I got the regular flu vaccination once about 18 months ago. A month later I had the flu for the first time in over 20 years.

I talked at length with my doctor about getting the H1N1 vaccine. I'm not in any of the top at-risk groups so he doesn't think I need to get it just yet. So I won't...yet.

I got the regular one, not getting the H1N1. If I were still spending 4 hours a day on public trans, I might feel differently.

I'm torn also...my doctor said she isn't getting one, and the pharmacist who gave me the seasonal vaccine said she isn't getting one either. They both feel that the vaccine has not been tested enough. As of right now, I'm not going to get one until more testing is done. I'm worried about my sister...she's away at college AND she gets colds a lot. She hasn't decided if she's getting it yet.

Go to any search engine, type in H1N1 squalene, then have fun reading about this vaccine.

I am so torn on this. I had made up my mind not to let my daughter have the H1N1 shot, but I was watching a piece on the news tonight about how the people the H1N1 flu is affecting are the young. I do not want my daughter to get sick from this, but I'm just not sure about the vaccine.

Honestly, if I had a child I would very seriously consider getting them the vaccine.

It's strongly recommended (aka mandatory) for me because I work in a hospital & I don't even work directly with patients.

Not getting it. I'm not in any high risk group, so if I get it I'll just though it out.
It's getting pretty close tho. A co-worker of mine who works two days at another company which is a street away said that one of the men working there has the swine-flu. He got it from his wife who works in a hospital.

Uh-huh...same here. Even my husband, who works in a hospital, will not take the vaccine. If it becomes mandatory for hospital employees, as it has in certain hospitals in NY, then we will have some legal intervention going on.
