Well, again... it's all about opinion here.

And I did not mean that comment for Matchbox. I'm a Matchbox fan all the way.

But, when Rob ia solo... it's about him for me. His solo band is very talented, but he is the star. And that's how it will always be for me when he is solo.

im glad you clarified, bc i was scratching my head..

This isn't directed at anyone in particular, but really, folks - to each their own. I don't understand why there's so much defensiveness and snarkiness about this.

Am I too old to say "hell to the yes"? Anyway, I agree.

Come on, you don't understand the defensiveness and snark by now? I think it's time to give up. It's like death and taxes. Wink (Hey, taxes! Maybe you know a little something about that. Big Grin )

Okay, a little more seriously here. After reading some of the comments and hearing about the solo show this time around, I'm really interested in seeing and hearing for myself. As I've mentioned before, I'm not a fan of the Cradlesong CD at all, so this will be a first for me: to experience Rob's work without being crazy over it. I want to see what hearing the songs live bring to the party. Should be fun, and if not fun, well then educational at least.

More than anything, I'm excited to attend the shows with wonderful friends. It's a girls' weekend I'm really looking forward to.

Why were you confused? We were talking about dancers on the solo tour... not anything pertaining to Matchbox in my comment. Smiler

.I have always said Rob is why I am here, from day one. Rob's voice and lyrics are what brought me to Matchbox, without Rob's voice, it wouldn't be the same, there would be no Matchbox. That's MY opinion...before everyone gets their panties in a huge wad. All the guys are talented (from both of his bands), there is no doubt about that...but I'm here for Rob. Tis the reason I am on ROB'S board. Big Grin

Now, enough with all the downer shit...Rob is on tour, that's what it's all about!! Smiler

Bingo. I like your attitude.

Listen it's no surprise that Rob faces an uphill battle getting a solo career off the ground. I came to MB20 as a Rob fan. That's it. End of story for me. Others did not. They are MB20 fans. Rob would probably be doing a great job by hanging onto a small fraction of the MB20 fanbase for his solo career. The hard part will be gaining new fans that are HIS fans. I think there's still a few MB20 only fans lingering around (some are in this post) but they are dwindling down. That's the way it should be. Rob doesn't = MB20 and vice versa.

i think the show lacks the energy that the last one did. and i really am not a fan of everyone other than Rob wearing black. i notice on the last tour that the lights focused on Rob, and nothing wrong with that...but, why make the band blend in with the background? i want to be able to see whats behind the curtains! yes, i mean the crew too! Wink

its a different vibe...but its also a different album. its "cradlesong" meaning lullaby...are they trying to lull us to sleep? sometimes i think so, but its kinda hard when the show gives me so much energy! lol!

“I’m playing this for some friends cuz I tried to play it for them once and I screwed it up terribly. This is their favorite song so I’m going to try it again. I know I messed it up last time pretty bad. But, I, I, listen, here’s the deal, it’s because this is a song that doesn’t exist really anywhere unless you happen to have found a bootleg copy of it. Because it’s a song that matchbox twenty just started playing live and never recorded and never did really anything with and just uh, just one day just as quickly stopped playing it. And so it’s easy to forget those after years and years. So I’m trying to remember it again right now. This song is called ‘Heavy’ ” Rob, in Temecula before he played Heavy for me 19Nov05

Thanks for Heavy in Vegas 18Mar08!!!

I *need* the other elements in a show to keep my visual attention. Even my ears get distracted on songs that are not necessarily my favorites. I notice a *lot*... I noticed his background singers didn't seem to be as strong as last time. I noticed the band *really* hung back on the stage this time. I noticed the Windows screen savers. I noticed the Carolina Liar guy on mandolin during "Getting Late" was *fucking up* the song. I don't know whether he thought he was being creative or if he really was just that off, but there were *always* stray notes when all the other instruments were silent - it sounded like crap through my earplugs. If he'd have stopped playing it would have been lovely. I noticed a lot of the songs were fairly straightforward and "off the CD" ...

I go to the show for the music - but if there's nothing else going on, I may as well stay home and listen to the CD. I don't go to a show to hear the CD - and honestly before I ever go see someone new now, I read around to see what it's like. If they play the CD, I skip the show.

Rob's show was good, don't get me wrong. I'm glad I had the opportunity to go. But comparably ..... it wasn't the same. I spent a lot of time in my seat, and a lot of time with my eyes closed. That's unusual for me.

i just wanted to say that i thuroughly enjoyed this post. thank you April!

I noticed the same thing about the band. the first thing i noticed actually, was that though most of the players were the same...things were really different...
and yeah, some of the songs did sound like they were being played off the CD. But, i could tell Rob was singing...a little strange at times...

Wow.. I'm sitting here scratching my head wondering what show a lot of you guys were seeing. The shows I've seen so far were filled with a wonderful energy and I love the interaction Rob always has with this band. He is always directing the audience's attention to each of them throughout the show and his on-stage playfulness with Frankie, Abe & Al seems very genuine. Rob seems confident, relaxed and very happy to back on stage with his solo family. One of my favorite moments was during Matt's intro to Someday when Rob sat with his eyes closed, just taking in Matt's beautiful music. He has so much respect for the members of his solo band and the audience senses that and gives the respect right back. That is a far cry from many, many other bands I've seen. As to the comment about the band wearing black, are you saying Rob MAKES them wear black?

You know, the last show I went to, I was really trying to kind of stand back and observe the crowd. Carolina Liar came on as people were drifting to their seats and they did an excellent job of catching people's ears and eyes and getting them interested. By the end of their short set I could see people actually paying attention - not bad for an opener on a triple bill. One Republic took the stage and the energy ramped up a little more. But by the time the stage was set for Rob you could feel the energy just crackling through the venue. You could taste the anticipation and excitement and when they took the stage and Rob swaggered out and slammed into Fire On the Mountain you could feel the collective release of thousands of expectations being met. It may be a scaled back production but the man and his band know how to put on a show no matter how bare bones it is. That is what makes his concerts so special and what turns first time casual fans into diehard repeating fans.

I'm just sorry some of you haven't seen the same shows most of us have been seeing!

Big Grin

I'd agree that the tour is lacking. I think he knows it Smiler i can see at the shows that he looks for the audience reaction. and he's changing it up ever concert to help.

what would have helped is bringing more original instruments to the show, but i guess it wasn't possible. and fixing the sound mix??

Sadly, no, I don't. It's going to be so strange to go to a Rob/mb20 show and not know most of the words. On the flip side, it means I'll be listening in an entirely different way. I'm looking forward to it.

I don't think it's the show's problem, or Rob's fault, but the fault of the crowd. Seriously, for whatever reason, they really sucked this year. Not you guys of course, the hardcore fans are always the best. But everyone around me was either drunk and high off their ass or sitting down and watching the screens instead of Rob, and this was in 1st and 2nd row! Eeker I could only imagine what the rest of the floor looked like. So I would not blame them for looking for that audience reaction because it wasn't there.

I think it's time to make all the shows GA again. Make the crowd work a bit. Those were the days. Bands really feed off crowd energy and vice versa.

I second this - the GA shows I've been to this tour were SO MUCH BETTER, I can only assume the difference is the energy of the crowd. We've been lucky enough to have great seats, but it is utterly depressing to see people sitting, wandering around, etc - never mind the empty seats!

Not yet has Rob disappointed, but I imagine it must be diffucult for him to perform some nights... the energy he feeds off of is part of the show.

Just curious but how many shows have you seen? I think that if anyone sees the same show several times it's bound to get a little samey.

Hey Lisa. I couldn't agree with your post more. Rob may just read this thread and say why bother and chuck touring altogether.

Here's the problem with that. Rob's fanbase is older and not likely to go to GA shows. That's just the reality of it all. Wasn't Houston GA and that's been one of the worst attended shows that I've seen figures for. Again, I'll say that Rob lost a lot of ground on getting his solo career going by not releasing a second album for 4 years. I know that MB20 puts out the 6 new songs but as this thread shows the fanbase between the two isn't the same.

Also, I sat for about half the Charlotte show. Did that mean that I wasn't having a good time, no. I was just taking the whole show in. There's that issue of people standing verus sitting. I saw Robert Plant and Alison Krauss last summer and everyone sat through the entire show. Two awesome performers where everyone sat and enjoyed seeing the talent on the stage. I think you are seeing this with this tour. If that's not your thing, maybe Rob's not the concert for you.
