I've been a MB20/Rob fan for YEARS, ever since good ol' 96 rolled around and Yourself Or Someone Like You came out. I've got every CD, including every Tabitha's Secret CD. I feel just like all of you do, a weird unexplainable connection between the power of his words and myself.
I have been to numerous Matchbox concerts and a handful of solo Rob concerts, and they were jaw dropping amazing. So it's definitely not without love when I say this, but I really find this tour to be incredibly disappointing. I don't know if it's a tight budget due to the economy (the ticket prices DON'T reflect that, however), or what, but the whole stage get up was undeniably cheesy. Rob's performance was awesome, his singing voice is getting better and stronger every day, and I am so impressed at his ability to sound completely flawless and in key without waver in concert. It's a rare talent. The band was pretty solid, the extra singers were blase. The background and lighting was -terrible-. I went to the STL Halloween show, so I expected a little bit of goofiness, but it just seemed like a mishmash of Windows 98 screensavers and Halloween clip art. I longed for something a little more musically adventurous. Last tour it seemed like they took a great handful of songs and really tweaked them a bit--the 9 minute Smooth/jazz impro session with Matt Serletic was the highlight and is imprinted on my brain to this day. But when they tried to take it outside the boundaries last evening, it was just "eh." The Thriller cover was neat, but there wasn't anything that really set it apart from the original. I'm really thankful my tickets were free, because as a broke ass student, I would be incredibly frustrated if I HAD spent the $50 and that's what I got. Please don't hate, I understand that my opinion won't be received happily, but it's just my feelings at this moment. |

I think everyone should be free to voice their opinion. It's a bit hard to do on this board, but most people here will listen to you without getting defensive.
I agree with you about the background/light show. I really liked the lighting from the first RT tour. It was simple, elegant and clean. With this one, the screen looked too small for the stage and felt out of place. I think it would have been better to just have the solid color backgrounds, like during Mockingbird and some of the encores. With that said, the main draw for me to a concert is not the background/light show but the actual live music performance. Simply put, Rob ALWAYS puts on an entertaining performance. I have yet to be let down in that department. Yes, there were technical difficulties and one out of 3 background singers wasn't always on key, but cohesively, they were solid & fantastic. If they came out on stage with flashlights and camping lanterns and played the same music show, I would still be happy. If you're looking for a light show, try Pink Floyd http://www.last.fm/user/JessicaSarahS http://twitter.com/JessicaSarahS http://www.flickr.com/photos/jessicasarahs/ http://www.youtube.com/user/JessicaSarahS So maybe we should start all over...Start all over again |

Sorry the concert was not all you were expecting it to be.
On the contrary I feel that these shows are full of energy, and I disagree about the lighting...not that I care much about that anyway. I dont go for the lights. To each there own...I suppose. welcome to Robs board BTW. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Thanks Val. :"I'm the world's most dangerous predator. I'm gonna disagree. The light show doesn't make the concert, Rob does. And I loved last night's show. I'm also biased because I'm not a big fan of light shows, I'm more focused on the music and artist. Rob connected well with audience and brought an energy that few people have. As a broke college student myself, I think my $50 well spent
But it's your opinion and this is America so you are entitled to it Thanks robthomas.org Follow me, an aspiring author, on Twitter: http://twitter.com/Live_Write "Have you seen Thriller? Honestly, lights are the last thing I notice in a concert, I get totally drawn in by the artist and the music.
I have been to concerts where the artist hasn't connected with the audience at all, trust me thats much worse, but each to their own, I'm still eagerly waiting for Rob to come to Oz, he's never dissapointed me yet and I don't believe he will this time round. |

I agree on the lighting aspect. They were distracting, sometimes, and there were some points when Rob was off to a side of the stage and i found myself thinking, ".. did someone forget to flip the switch and the screensaver came on?"
That said - these ARE smaller venues than matchbox has played, and even for the last solo tour. Wasn't the last tour mainly amphitheaters? Those typically are bigger stages... which means more lighting options I don't remember the lights/screens from the first round of club dates, although the venues were even a bit smaller than this time. |

The club dates had the same lighting as the amphitheater tour as far as I remember. The colorful light cubes: I think the amphitheater tour just had more. http://www.last.fm/user/JessicaSarahS http://twitter.com/JessicaSarahS http://www.flickr.com/photos/jessicasarahs/ http://www.youtube.com/user/JessicaSarahS So maybe we should start all over...Start all over again |

The lighting/background was like, two sentences of my post, and wasn't the focus point of what I meant..
I saw him solo at a much smaller venue than when I saw him last night, and it was amazing. Like someone mentioned, the whole show and set were so elegant and was definitely the work of a master crew and band. This just struck me as.. mediocre. I think I actually did even see a Windows error message at one point on the projection screen. But anyways, I'm glad that my opinion isn't far off base, hopefully this is an "off" tour.. not EVERY single one can be flawless, and I'll still be rocking out no matter what! |

There's a light show?

If I had to complain about something, I would say that I miss the acoustic songs. But I guess I got them in Reno, so I'm taking my complaining away.

We all have flaws an we all have opinions this is what makes us all so unique I'm sure the little imperfections of the lights, the bkground singers not on key,the stage not being as great as the last tour. These are all little things. The BIG picture here is how WONDERFUL Rob is live. How he reaches out to his fans an brings us on his journey through the music.I'm very glad I had the opportunity to see the shows I have an meet the people I have so for me every $$ I have spent is worth it |
