I was a punk rocker when I was a between the age of 14 and 18 Smiler

I don't think of Elvis Costello or The Ramones as true punk either.
Maybe it's just me, but when I think of punk I think of The Dead Boys, The Avengers, The Buzzcocks, Living Daylights, Misspent Youth, Plastix, The Outsiders, as well as The Clash and The Sex Pistols.

I can see how someone who doesn't know a lot about punk might think Elvis or the ramones are punk but they really weren't at all.

I don't think matchbox 20 is the slightest bit punk rock and I don't think any of the artists I just mentioned would either.

It's nothing against matchbox, they just aren't punk.
It's weird to see them listed next to the clash as punk is all.

Back when they first came out people considered them country because Rob sang with a slight twang, and people considered them folk because the songs told stories.

I think it's a testament to the fact that they play rock music that's accessible in many aspects that people see all these different influences in them.
I think they defy category that way.
I like that about them, always have.

Vonnie, I kindly disagree, I was drummer of a punk rock band during the 80's, I moved on to Grunge due to alot of my punk rock friends found a niche in that sector of music. It spoke to us in the same way punk music did. Ben Shephard who is a near and dear friend of mine, he was the bassist for Sound Garden would definately disagree with you. I know alot about punk rock music. It's a perception. Punk is music that goes against the grain, sometimes harsh and sometimes not. I'm saying it's not hard to imagine someone thinking some of MB20's music might have that influence to it, it doesn't always follow the expected.

It's okay to disagree. I don't hear punk in their sound at all.
Especially given the band members musical influences. Very little punk influences if any at all.
It could be heard that way but then if you are saying bands that don't follow trends can be punk then really all alternative and bands that defy labels could be considered punk.
That means, bands like Big and Rich who defy country standards are punk, bands like less than jake who defy ska standards are punk, bands that defy metal standards like lamb of god or pantera are punk.
I guess I could see it that way but punk music to me and to the people I grew up listening to it was more than music, it was a movement.
Punk musicians really shunned corporate sponsorship and expectations of sleek live shows.
It was stripped down, chaotic, and often times barely controlled political movements.
I just don't see that in matchbox 20 at all.
I guess we agree to disagree Smiler

I like them fine, as actors. I don't sleep with them, so the rest doesn't matter too much to me. I did read recently that she figures she gets paid "stupid" money to do what she does, so she give 1/3 of everything to charities. And they are mostly children's charities in the world. So I'm good with that. I like her better when I don't read her comments, I think. Nice that she listens to MB20 (maybe), but thinking they are punk sounds like a Jessica Simpson statement..."Is it chicken or fish? I don't get it!" DUH!!!

We absolutely can agree to disagree. Big Grin And I'm not talking about the political movement portion of punk. Though Rob has made some very political statements, and Kyles band The New Left is named after a 60's left wing political movement.

I'm actually talking more the ability to do something outside the current music scene. There are many musical sides to it, Elvis Costello by the way was very political in his day. He was part of the whole punk movement, he performed along side of The Sex Pistols and The Clash and was respected as a part of that sub culture.
I agree punk had a political side and an anti establishment side to it as did grunge. If you haven't Vonnie please look at my myspace page..lol..I still have that side to me too. It would be very one sided though to think that punk/grunge only was about the political/anti establishment side of it.
