I know everyone has their personal opinions of this album, but I've heard certain phrases over and over the past couple of days and I'm trying to understand it....

Just curious... going to an above comment... how can anyone say "all the excess isn't you"? It obviously is! As Rob said... 'man and machine'... This is something HE wanted to create. So it just strikes me funny when people say this music 'isn't him' - I want to yell YES IT IS! Wink If it wasn't something he enjoyed and appreciated he wouldn't be doing it, singing it or promoting it - much less put out something and dedicate his time to such an intensive and heartfelt project. Wink

Maybe the 'excess' and collaboration with other artists doesn't follow with the 'listener's' taste in music...but STB a let down?? I think that goes to what they were expecting from Rob...

What did they 'expect to hear' on this album? Another PUSH? another 3AM? Confused

I really think if people opened up their hearts and ears and really listened with no expectations of the sound based on previous songs, they'd get what Rob is doing and appreciate it and know that it IS in fact HIM. Smiler

And I'm sure some fabulous acoustic versions of each song will eventually surface for those who don't like the 'excess'... Smiler

Stripped down Rob good too... Wink LOL!

First off, i just want to say you're absolutely correct. It is all about the listeners expectations. And for me that's what it's all about. And it is my personal opionion that Rob could have done so much more. And you know what they say about opinions...

I hope Rob is happy with his product. Because if he's not than he has own personal issues to solve. He should be happy because like i said earlier there are millions who love this album. Its just not the direction I want to see the man go.

And also- i thought i made it clear that i didn't expect this album to sound like matchbox twenty. just thought i'd reiterate that.

I see your point. Smiler Since you mentioned that do see his poetry throughout the album, I hope you will be able to appreciate and find aspects of the music to which you can relate. I think the stripped down versions will be killer! Smiler Putting myself in your shoes, I just hate it when I expect something to be a certain way, and then when the outcome isn't what I expected, I immediately dislike it regardless without really giving it a heartfelt chance, and examining what I expected in the first place!

And re: the mindset that this is his direction... Watch out - it can change in a heartbeat - as we've seen so often! Who knows what's next! LOL! Wink Big Grin

Have a good day. Smiler

YOu said that you didn't expect Matchbox Twenty, but you did expect Rob Thomas. This is Rob Thomas. You are of course entitled to have an opinion, but I think that saying you expected Rob Thomas, when this is his first solo album, is contradictory. How can you really know what to expect? Again, this clearly is Rob Thomas.

Have a great day though!

This album is totally what I expeced from Rob. I think it's very diverse and emotionally in many songs. As Rob said on Leno, he poured his heart and soul into these songs. Doesn't sound like he thinks this album isn't him.

Personally, I think too many people want Rob a certain way....with long hair and remaking YOSLY a thousand times. Someone made a nasty review on amazon.com saying pretty much the same thing. I don't think that person is you but I think it's someone who has posted on this forum and the GD before.

Rob has no "personal issues to solve". He has stated many times how proud he is of this album. I would be too, if I were him. It's tremendous!

Rob recently gave an interview, (I think it was for VH-1) and he said that he listened to many genres and he wasn't going for a MB 20 sound but wanted to try many different approaches. He has also said that those who like his music can travel along side him for this journey and if for some reason they disagree with his choices, they can leave the journey. (I paraphrased of course)
As far as I am concerned, he could write nursery rhyme tunes and I would stay on for his soul, his words, his music and his karma. Listen again and try to feel his music because it is really the only way to experience Rob.

I don't know how many of us know him personally but I think someone as creative and inspiring as Rob must have a lot to pour out and this might just be yet another facet of him. As for the change in hair, etc. Who cares? Rob is Rob in his soul and although he is quite a sight for these sore eyes, I will take him any way I can.

your have your opinion. and you don't like the album. well sorry you don't like it. but are your even giving it a listen????? over and over and over again doesn't really mean you are listening to it. try it. if not, then move on. don't dwell on something that doesn't make your heart move. stb makes my heart dance.

We'll just let that reference to Justin Timberlake slide Wink

What I find completely ridiculous is the length of your user name Wink

I walked away from the computer after i wrote the original entry on this topic and came back to find that many of you along the way lost the point or didn't read any of the entries that followed it.

1.) i never said anything about his looks
2.) i was using justin timberlake to signify how poppy the album sounds.
3.) i have truly listened to the album "over and over and over and over again"

lyricly, i love what he does in some songs, its trully deep and poetic. And i'll repeat for the billionth time, I DIDN'T WANT ANOTHER MATCHBOX TWENTY ALBUM! I just felt like, it could have been something more (and i'm basing this off of the many collaborations he has done with other artist outside of matchbox.)

I think its wonderful that so many people relate to him and love this album. Hell i can't tell you how many songs he's written that feel like they've been ripped out of my life.

Everyone have a great night! I'll be around while i'm studying for exam time.

Okay everypne has put their two cents in...here's mine. Honestly who cares what people think of the album? All of you bought this album for a reason, whether it be for the slight glimpse of yet another perfect portrait of rob, or to simply endulge in some good ol' tunes sung by Mr. Thomas himself. We all are quilty of coming on here and sharing our thoughts...but for christ sake....just enjoy. So what if someone doesn't like the album...who died and made you all music critics? I'm not trying to piss in anyones cornflakes or anything of that nature...but for christ sake its just an album... (a complex one if i might say so myself)....there will be more.
All the best...to all of you...good night
