My mother walks into the changing area where we were getting dressed.

Dana-Ooooooh baby you look so beautiful.
Briana-Thanks ma.
Dana-I just cant believe this is happening.
Marena-Mama will you stop you gon make her cry.
Briana-I know, you gon make me get make up all on dress and ruin my big day.
Dana-*digging through her purse* Where's my camera?
Briana-You'll have plenty of pictures from the photographer.
Dana-But I want my own. Now come you two, stand next to each other.
Marena-Maaaaaaa.
Dana-Just do it Marena.

We stand close for a picture and smile big. My mother’s enthusiasm about this day is crazy! I think she’s more excited than I am.

Briana-Are you done now? I still have to finish getting dressed.
Dana-I’m sorry baby I’m just so happy. I never thought this day would come.
Marena-Maa!
Dana-Oh hursh, you know what I mean. The way you were in high school, none of us ever thought this would happen for you.
Briana-Yeah, I know. I didn’t either.

Let me take you back to that time way long ago. When, to me, love was just a word. When beauty was something I thought I’d never know personally. When romance was just a type of movie. It’s the first day of my senior year of high school. I let my best friend Raven talk me into dressing up a little instead of wearing my usual jeans and a t-shirt. So I let her pick out my outfit. It was a printed baby phat shirt, blue jean floods, and a pair of all white flip flops with the small heel. I stood in my bedroom looking in my full length mirror.
Briana-*sigh* Ok Bri, this year it’s gonna be different. All that matters is what you think about yourself, don’t listen to dem trifling hoes and dusty niggas. No matter what they say just don’t let it get to you.
After I finished giving myself a little pep talk my cell phone rang. It was Raven.

Briana-Hello?
Raven-Are you ready?
Briana-Yeah I guess.
Raven-Ok, I’m on my way.
Briana-Aiight.

I hang up my phone and put it in my purse then go downstairs. Marena was sitting in the kitchen eating a bowl of cereal.

Marena-Aw you look cute.
Briana-If you say so.
Marena-Why don’t you dress like that more often?
Briana-Because it takes too long and I look ridiculous.
Dana-*walking into the kitchen* No you don’t, you look beautiful.
Briana-I guess.

I take an apple off the counter and wash it off. I sit down at the table and start ta eat it when someone knocks on the door. It could only be one person so I grab my jacket, book bag, and purse and head out the door. I get in the car and she drives off.

Raven-See I told you it would be cute.
Briana-It is not, I look retarded.
Raven-Girl will you hursh. You look fine, damn. You need to stop downin yoself.
Briana-Whatever.

We get to the school and park in the student parking lot across the street. I walk into the building and go to my locker. I put away my book bag and jacket then go to my first period class. It was English. Iono wats wit dese counselors scheduling me fa English at 7:20 in da got damn morning. Dey musta lost dey damn brain!! I take a seat near the back of the room. A few minutes later the bell rings and the teacher walks in.

M/V-Hello class my name is Mr. Bates. We’re going to start off with a little activity. I want you all to introduce yourselves to the class. When it’s your turn I want you to stand where you’re sitting, tell us your name and something interesting about yourself. We’re going to start on the left side of the room and work our way around.
F/V-*standin up* Ok well my name is Mallorie and something dats interesting bout me is imma good dresser.
Mr. Bates-Not exactly what I was looking for, but ok.

Some more people go and then it was my turn. I sit there for a second not wanting to get up.

Mr. Bates-Ms. Johnson, it’s your turn.
Briana-Oh, sorry.

I stand up.

Briana-Well my name is B…

Mr. Bates-Mallorie do you want to start this year off with a referral?
Mallorie-No.
Mr. Bates-Go on Ms. Johnson.
Briana-My name is Briana…and there’s really nothing interesting about me.
Mallorie-Now that’s not true. Are forgettin dat you half cow half human? Lol

I stand there and look around the room. Everyone was laughing so I just sat down wit my head hung low. I wanted to cry but I wasn’t gonna give her the satifaction of seeing me shed tears over a comment she made.

Mr. Bate-Ok that’s it, get out of my classroom I’m writing you up.
Mallorie-But wat I do?
Mr. Bates-Don’t ask me dumb questions. Now get out.

She gets up and walks out of the classroom.

Mr. Bates-Ms. Johnson are you ok?
Briana-Oh yeah I’m fine. I don’t care wat she has to say about me.
Mr. Bates-Are you sure? Do you want to take a small break?
Briana-No I’m fine, but can I go to the bathroom doe?
Mr. Bates-Sure, bring me your agenda book.

I take him my book and he signs it. I leave the class and go to the restroom. I stand there looking in the mirror.

Briana-*thinking to myself* Wat hell made me think this year would be any different? It’s not even eight o’clock in the morning and they already startin in on me. Why did let my mama talk me outta bein home schooled?

I get myself together and go back to class.
