I had run away from home when I was 14. Well if you could call it a home. My mother died of cancer and father I never knew. Needless to say I was pretty much on my own when I was put in that foster home. It took a while for anyone to take me. Parents want young children, not preteens. They thought it would be fun to be parents, entertaining, until they found out it was work and opted to send us back to the agency or neglect us. I had been through 3 before one actually decided to keep. It wasn’t that the people were cruel or beat me or anything; they just had enough kids to deal with,

7 total.

I’m surprised they even noticed my disappearance when I left, all they had to deal with. But they did, and for a while I had to hide, duck into bushes, run into cornerstores as they had the officers looking for their missing child. Their child? I doubt they even knew my name without those papers. But eventually, they stopped looking and gave in to the fact that I was gone and I had no intention of coming back. I didn`t think they cared to begin with.

The streets of Atlanta weren`t horrible to me. I managed to get at least a sandwich once in a while and some clothes in a box outside the Goodwill. I knew I had been seen, they probably felt sorry for me. I lived everywhere and nowhere, a bench was usually my bed. I didn`t cry at nights for home and love, because if I wanted a “home” I could go back to foster care. It wasn`t all that different from real parents and their children anyway, to be honest in my eyes .

Then I met him.

He swaggered in like nobody`s business to a cornerstore I was contemplating stealing from. I was thinner then I was when I started out, 3 weeks until 15. I still had a figure that might look good if I didn`t always wear the tattered rags I could get ahold of. But that day I had found the jackpot: An Old SKool outfit that was too small for this lady, so she put it out for goodwill. I had found a 5 that day that I could have spent on food, but instead I wanted that outfit. I wore it with pride, even with my cheap black flip flops and empty stomach. I thought I looked good.

But back to him . . .

He was fly in his bape jacket and designer jeans, too big of course and his sag made him look right. High class from head to toe and a smile that looked part sexy and part dangerous. I should have sense the danger of him spotting me, scantly clad and my hair a mess upon my shoulders. I should have laid low and stolen a bag of chips or two before leaving but soon I felt his gaze on me, I let him look and stood still as he studied me. His shades gleamed and his lips curled into a grin as he approached me.

“A pretty lil thing such as yourself shouldn`t be stealin`” His attention diverted for a moment to the carpet bag I was stuffing with cheap junk food. Then back to my developing figure.

“I have to do what I have to do.” I answered bluntly, and grabbed a chocolate bar before I secured my bag closed.

“I say you don`t have too shorty.” His platinum watch gleamed in the florescent lighting as he raised his hand to touch my face.

“And how is that? You gonna pay for my food? You don`t have to…” The way he touched me made me shiver. I had no idea what to think.

“You funny girl. What`s say you come work for me?” He licked his lips as he concentrated into my eyes.

“Work for you? What kind of work?” he laughed.

“I think you know what kind of work, with what you workin` with.”

“I don`t think so.” He looked good, but I would be fine on my own. I didn`t need to trick.

“If that`s how you want it girl.” His slick demeanor didn`t falter one bit as he reached into his pocket and took out a hundred. “Buy that food you got there girl, and you some good ass shoes to go with that outfit. That`ll last you.”

Even though that comment was sarcastic, the way he said it was almost jokingly. He had made me feel comfortable. I stared at the hundred wondering why all dudes around weren`t that generous. Nevermind a pimp. I pocketed the hundred and put the snacks back and watched him walk out to his car. He smirked at me as he got in and I immediately followed into the passenger seat.

A hundred may not be much, but it was the most I`ve had in my possession altogether in my life.

He just grinned knowingly, looked at me, started the car and sped off. No words necessary. He didn`t have to say anything. He knew I would go with him. At the time I was happy, for a home, no matter what circumstances. And the feelings of fresh money in my palm had me drunk on the thought…
