Yea i agree with the fact that its going to start contrevorsy because even when me and my friends discuss it we get into huge arguments. Sometimes its fine tho but music is not the same as sports where u can line up the stats. to some degree you can with sales and shit like that but just because someone sells doesnt mean they are the best, that could mean they are more popular and does being popular make you the best, if it does then anybody can make a wack song and get famous and be the best i think not. people will listen if ur shit is good no matter what it is. music is music and deciding who is better then who is a huge risk on behalf of musics respect

It would be my pleasure to follow the humble and much needed leadership your providing to the world. The media has to be exposed because the premises that they provide aren't always good for us. We need reflection and deep thought to fight the subliminal messages being sent to our subconscious. Keep up the good work Lupe, you have a strong following and your fans out here in the wild 100's are taking heed.

Yes, media causes controversy in hip hop. As of late, it's died out with the 'death' of hip hop, and the rise of pop hits from Lady Gaga and Britney Spears, but the media's job is to cause as much controversy as possible. Like recently with Nas, him calling his new album(which was a really cohesive work, much better than HHID or Street's Disciple) N!gger, the hip hop media turned that into such controversy. Although titling a work a word that contains so much history and controversy, it's going to inevitably lead to controversy, but Nas helps educate the user on the word N!gger, which is why I think it's perfect to label his work that.

I am, overall, in a nutshell, not a fan of the media, even though it's what modern society thrivexs on.
1.) The need for money has killed hip hop. Back in the nineties, Organized Konfusion, Nas, Biggie, Wu, The Roots, The Juice Crew etc were all producing art. The standards have dropped so severly, it's disappointing to see.
2.) Media makes it seem like hip hop is only music. I don't know where they've gotten this idea that hip hop and rap music are different, but it completely ignores the other 3 elements.

It's sad because only a handful of good artists (Lupe, Slaughterhouse, Monch, Nas, Blackstar, Underground acts like Mr Lif, Murs etc) are creating good music. Scarface retired, Rakim's release has been delayed, Eminem's turned into a shitty pop artist even though his recent freestyles with Tim Westwood were good et al. Hip Hop's needing a savior. I personally think that Lupe, since he has a little populatiry to his name, can do that, since he's a true rapper. Combine that with media attention, and you have a savior.

As for top 5 lists, I've never been a fan of them since any top lists, for anything, whether it be top 5 footballers, rappers etc, it's always going to be indefinite. There's no true top 5 list. Of Course, I always back up Rakim as the best rapper since he revolutionized lyricism and came with a very, very consistent discography, and I always back GZA as the best lyricist since he comes with some amazingly clever lines (i.e "patriotic hustlers who die for presidents", or "I'm an ace at the club with the heart to wear diamonds"), but does that make it automatically true? No, of course not. b
