My "Ben Gibbard" google news alert delivered this to my mailbox this am. Could this possibly be true? What happened to Joan? http://justjared.buzznet.com/2008/12/29/zooey-deschanel-engaged-ben-gibbard/ Earlier today, we reported that Yes Man actress Zooey Deschanel got engaged earlier this month. That part is 100% true, but not to AFI bass guitarist Hunter Burgan. A source close to the couple tells JustJared.com that Zooey, 28, is happily engaged to Ben Gibbard, the lead singer of Death Cab for Cutie and The Postal Service. Reps for the couple would not comment on their personal lives. I don't want to say it like it's fact, because I read it on the internet, but I think he did. I read that on the Barsuk boards-- that he bought a house in LA. And I remember him talking about going to a Dodgers game with his girlfriend in an interview with MLB.

Not really. I remember him saying in an interview that he actually doesn't hate LA. That instead, the song was written from the point of view of a character...not himself. It's a love song. The narrator is trying to convince his lover from leaving him. Am I making this up? I thought I read that. Maybe I have no idea what I'm talking about.

I think I remember that interview Justin, and I think you're kinda right. Obviously the feelings towards LA come from somewhere, and doubtless he's had those thoughts before when he's visited the place - but that doesn't mean he holds anything against the place still or actually means to say that base reaction is his definitive one towards the city. It's not so much that it was completely a character, but (if I read it rightly) he was saying something about the song being meant to convince the 'you' of the title not to move away, and coming up with reasons not to move to LA as a method. So the hatred of LA is exaggerated (though not non-existent) for the purposes of convincing this person not to leave him.

I suppose i'll be the first to say this.
Ben Gibbard=Marriage was always something that I joked about being the end of Death Cab in that the themes and lyrics would be gone. I know that sounds like really selfish and lame but even some others were saying how Ben had a different air about him this tour. And Zoey, while I do not know much about her, her music to me seemed just extremely indie cliche. To me it's almost strange seeing Ben being married to someone as I see as an indie cliche. I love Ben, and from what I have seen Zoey seems really smart and a good person, but this is really crazy to me I do wish all the best of course, but I always knew one of my favorite kings of the broken heart, would someday get married, just didn't expect it to be today. |

I probably came off as a huge fanboy from that post, but I will stand that I am shocked and that the man who has brought so much pain through song, is getting what he always seemed to be shooting for. For that we as fans can only be happy, but when I think of Zoey I do think of the cliche indie girl. |

I'm wondering what happened to Joan as well... I'm pretty sure hewas dating her fairly recently so this seems kind of sudden. Didn't know Ben moved to LA, but I do remember that interview, Justin. |
