Thread made for the billionth time but here we go...

Transatlanticism
Facts/Photo Album (tie)
Narrow Stairs/Plans (tie)
Something About Airplanes
You Can Play These Songs with Chords

Basically, the top three are a tie. Transatlanticism is good sentimentally, Facts is good lyrically, and Photo Album is good musically.

I love Plans but they were more interesting earlier in their career, especially lyrically.

Plans
Transatlanticism
We have the facts and are voting yes
Narrow Stairs
The Photo Album
Something about Airplanes
You can play these songs with chords

Even though 'Airplanes' and 'chords' have outstanding songs on them, the album as a whole suffered. Whereas trans and plans were definatley an album, not just individual songs on a cd. I still have respect for 'Airplanes' and 'chords' but the quality of plans and trans make them my favs.

I would probs say photo album is my fav. But I have to say even though the older stuff is awesome the production and the quality of the albums of trans+ are awesome. Especially the ambiance in Plans and Narrow Stairs. I personally think death cab go from strength to strength in their song writing, but I will always love Photo Album, I just find it really easy to just put it on and listen to it from start and finish, even though I find this with all the albums just more so with photo.

Good point on the production, listening to Plans on headphones really amplifies how beautiful the music is. Trans is also a step-up in terms of production and you can tell when you hear them...still I feel the lyrics and the actual music is more interesting in the first two/three albums.

there earlier stuff is far more interesting and really just plain better than there later releases in my humble opinion. however i do think chris hit his peak in regards to production with 'transatlanticism' in 2003. if only for its truly beautiful sense of atmosphere he managed to create. i think it will be looked back on as the quintessential one. i love there first recordings too, theres a far greater sense of melancholy and intensity behind the songs. i guess its that lo-fi DIY sensibility. i personally came to the band through 'the photo album' around 2002, so it holds great sentimental connections for me. "we laugh indoors" will forever remain my favourite death cab for cutie song.

in terms of my favourite, 'we have the facts...' is just perfect.

Still though, imho, putting the overlong incoherent collection of demos, semi-emberassing outtakes and recycled material that Chords is over a concise, well-produced and well written pop album like Plans is kinda like pissing the band in their mouths just to prove you like "old cab" better.

But then again, it really isn't an album is it?
