narrow stairs? open windows? maybe something with how the band seemed to restrict themselves on this album in some ways, but also opened themselves up...to make a short statement out of it.
idk tho...hmm

I think it's referring to the fact that as you grow older, the possibilities of life slowly fade away and you become set in a certain path. I think that Ben is finally realizing that he is kind of stuck in what he's doing right now. Gone is the opportunity of an idealistic family with a beautiful wife and two kids, etc. I think that this is a prevalent theme in the album, especially on Bixby. I think he's realizing that the stairs are getting narrower and narrower and it's too late to turn back at this point.

I don't see what's holding Ben back from having a family and kids. He probably thinks it would be irresponsible considering his situation, but Colin Meloy had a kid. Oh well, best of luck to him on this one, he seems to be hung up on it.

Me too... i've been googling like crazy and I can't find it but it was one of those early interviews about the album i remember. 'Clever Death Cab...' is probably right.

on the topic of titles... I don't know if this was addressed before but why did they give the album name: we have the facts and we're voting yes... as well as something about airplanes?
just wondering :]

Maybe we have the facts is about how the narrator learned the truth about his ex? like how on for what reason he's talkin about "Tracing the plot finds skin touching skin" and "i may have got an invitation but i wasn't invited" on scientist studies. it's kind of like a fact based analysis of a failed relationship?
airplanes....hmmm stab in the dark. some of the songs were written aboard an airplane? i don't know. but the other titles after those became more obvious... i guess that was a change along with ben's lyrics becoming more clear
something about airplanes title, its as obscure as some of the lyrics off the album. ah well, maybe as you said he was just writing off an airplane haha
