quote: Originally posted by .Justin.: Okay, now I feel like I have to make my argument. I can hear why you're saying Facts is more of an album and in some cases I can even hear the argument that some of the songs on Facts are superior. But, life doesn't flow. Life doesn't fit perfectly together like Facts. The Photo Album is intentionally fragmented, like an actual Photo Album. Each picture isn't necessarily linked to the other but they each capture a very important moment in life. Death Cab knew that and I think they intentionally named it the Photo Album for that reason. So, in a sense, the album does flow in that it follows a theme--the theme being discontinuity. I've always been attracted to these "moment" songs or ones where Ben has "revelations". To me, that's what life's about. So, while songs on Facts or Trans may be a little better, more epic, have better guitar, or whatever--the songs on The Photo Album will always give me the greatest emotional response. And that's why I listen to music whether that emotion be nostalgia, happiness, sadness, confusion, confidence...anything, not whether I really like a guitar hook (that kind of music is awesome don't get me wrong, but that kind of music isn't going to be my favorite album of all-time). Now, if The Photo Album is in fact my #1 album, Trans and Facts are so close behind it's scary, but I just don't think the Photo Album receives enough credit--from the band and from fans. SO BACK OFF, HATERS.
-P.S.-Brian have you listened to it on vinyl yet? If not, do it. It's one of my favorite things to do. There's a bunch of subtleties that I didn't hear on my digital version.

Thanks for the support bettershredder. if you read my post after my rant, james, i say i associate The Stability EP with it also. I mean I don't consider the EP as part of the album, but it's a nice little add-on, in a sense. I actually think that if they placed those songs smack dab in the middle of the Photo Album, it would be beneficial to the record. Another thing that I didn't add in that post, is that it's filled with great, back-to-back song combos. Steadier Footing into A Movie Script Ending, A Movie Script Ending into We Laugh Indoors, and probably my favorite combo of all-time is Coney Island into Debate Exposes Doubt.

Facts is hands down the best one. So many great songs. It is a great story. Best song they ever made is Title Track. That was the first DCfC song I heard and it made me an instant fan. It so subtle and makes you want to listen. Narrow Stairs is connected to Facts. Cath and Epilouge.

Justin -- while I appreciated your well thought out reasons for why Photo Album is the best, your appreciation of the fragmentation of the album is wholly subjective and personal. While I appreciate that it was an artistic choice, not all artistic choices necessarily work. I am, I guess, by nature the type who appreciates the cohesiveness of an album, and the choice to do that with Facts really endears it to me. It feels like an overall story arc -- and, might I add, one that works well -- which gels everything together. Granted, it's not as unusual an artistic choice, but few do it so well. We'll agree to disagree on which is better, I suppose, and enjoy the albums regardless.
A sophism of madness...

Justin, I've rethought what you say about Photo Album... and I do think it is their BEST album musically. But Facts is my PERSONAL favorite, just mainly because of the lyrics and the songs mean a lot to me. And Transatlanticism has a sentimental value to me. So they are all the best in their own ways, and I see why you love it so much.

Brian now you just seem like a flip flopper. I thought as a mod you were supposed to stand firm against the lower people on this forum like Justin?
WWJJJD? Everyone should ask themselves this question daily.
