So for some reason I cannot stand to listen to "different names for the same thing" I dont know why something about the song just makes me super uneasy and i just dont like it.
I bought the directions DVD and I always skip over it when it comes on. It just is strange to me because it is really the one and only song by them i cannot stand to listen to.
wondering if anyone else felt the same, even opposing views are welcome of course!
i always thought it was about going to different place and everything is just blah. but the lyrics sound like mr gibbard is lost in mexico or some other place where they dont speak english.
Alone on a train, aimless in wander An outdated map crumpled in my pocket But I didn?t care where I was going Because they?re all different names for the same place
The coast disappeared when the sea drowned the sun And I knew no words to share it with anyone The boundaries of language I quietly cursed And all the different names for the same thing
There are different names for the same things There are different names for the same things

The lyrics arent bad they are actually kinda nice. I just do not really enjoy the song as much as i enjoy the other music. But that is a good observation that is somewhere foreign... Never really listened to it enough to notice.
i can tolerate very little of post photo album records of late. Probably because seeing four times in the space of a week has killed those albums for me & because death cab fans tend to never shut up about them.
The song has always reminded me of Japan... sometimes there are places where you're just riding on a train and no matter where you get off it's gonna be the same. That and every map in Japan seems to be at least somewhat outdated.
Now that I actually know Japanese it's different, but the first time I was here it was definately exactly how he describes his situation.
I wonder what the real meaning of the song is... he might've been talking about relationships and how they all basically end up the same way.
seeing as how the sun sets in the west, and he's making a sunset reference here over a coastal beach, we can assume he's on the western side of whatever country he's at.

You sound very soft. It's just you being soft as shite, it's a brilliant song.

^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ No need to be rude. I am not going to insult you for thinking it is a brilliant song. Just my opinion. Oh and i am just a bit confused as to what you might mean by "soft"
