In an article I just read posted by yoko I saw that Death Cab is thinking about releasing a track on Bush's re-election. I personally would prefer they didn't sing about American politics as Green Day already does enough of that for every alternative band to date, however I would like to know what you guys think about this topic.

I think it's great for bands to express their politics, of course I might not feel that way if their politics conflicted with my own.

Regardless of your political opinions, I think you should be open to Ben writing about whatever he wants. Artists are supposed to express themselves. He's not trying to prove anything to anyone, he's just expressing something he feels passionate about. What's wrong with that?

Well, it may not be wrong for you, however whenever someone is openly standing up against something you are for it can be a turn off to anyone, no?

sure, but I think a band shouldn't be concerned with completely pleasing every person, but rather with expressing themselves in the forum of music.

Song writing is meant to be about self expression, and everyones entitled to their own views.

i can understand that someone would be put off by a political song. if death cab were to write a pro-bush song, i would be quite put off. however, bands are free to write about whatever they want. if you do not want to listen to an anti -bush song, then don't listen to it. try to enjoy the rest of the band's music, and respect their opinion.

I have difficulty believing anyone with good enough taste to like DCfC actually likes Bush. I mean Death Cab's music seems very intelligent to me...so....

i definetely love death cab, i don't think bush is totally rad, but he's better than kerry any day, and i think bashing polititians in music is just lame, there's other ways for bands to voice their opinions than to mix it with their art. it always comes out sounding very cliche and forced...p.s. i'm extremely intelligent

What is this supposed to mean exactly? I'm originally from Texas and I am a liberal. Not all Texans are republicans and pro-Bush. Thanks for the stereotype though. Wink

You used to have to hear songs to talk about their politics.
If a song says "Bush sucks" although I may agree, that's not a quality political song, that's just annoyingly simple. I think it's impossible to be a writer these days and keep your politics completely seperate.
