American Idol's finalists received more votes than any president in American history

Oh, I'm sure if 13 year old girls were aloud to vote as often as they like for their favourite president their would be just as many voters. The canditates would possibly have to sing their policies to the tune of a kelly clarkson song though?

I guess I'd be alright with that. As long as its Breakaway.

So American Dreamz was a true story?

Can't say I am that surprised, the same thing would happen here, if voting was not compulsory.

i'm guessing that a majority of votes were cast by people below the legal voting age, or by people casting multiple votes. i don't think that's really a legitamite comparison.

it's still true that voter turnout in the US is pathetic. most people just don't feel like they can make a difference. and even if it did, to them, a different president really doesn't make that much of a difference either. we have the constitution over our head and all public benefits will apply to everyone whether they voted or not.

i think a fine for not voting would rock.

good point, but think how many people we would have casting votes for whoever has the coolest name just to avoid the fine.

atleast now, the people who do go to vote are voting because they want to cast a vote (whether they are well-informed about the candidates are not)

look all that needs to be said about american voters is we elected Conan the Barbarian governor

i always thought something like australia..where they have to vote, even if its to say "no vote" at least that way you get people to the polling stations.
(is that how they do it down under?)

Yes, that is indeed correct. If you don't vote in an election, it is an automatic A$2,000 fine. However, this can lead to lots of 'donkey votes' where people just turn up draw a picture on a ballot paper, submit it, and not vote for anyone. (Roughly about 20% of total votes in Aust.).

In short, compulsory voting is useless.

With the ever growing power of the executive branch, you shouldn't speak in such absolutes in regards to the constitution...even more so, the constitution protects business first and foremost, all that stuff about the people just has a nice ring to it…

Furthermore...it is not at all surprising that such a statistic can be found, of course because of the more empirical age regulations and voting fraud so to speak, but also because we are trained to be a rabid consumers and indifferent observers, but not critical participants. True, this last election had the highest voter turn out of any other election, but to me it reeked of ignorant and mislead jingoist, on both sides.

Our votes have become not a process of selecting programs and aims which suit us, but merely a procedure for selecting a symbolic figure...

Haha, in a sense American Idol is a truer democracy than the Presidential Elections, the public is allowed full accesses to the candidate’s strengths and weaknesses, and in a highly critical arena (where is the political equivalent to Simon?)…Where as the presidential ‘debates’

Well,

(oh and I was commenting toward If Winter Ends, with the first bit)

wow, a thread that's worthwhile. I can't help from posting in here.

I don't think it's really a bad sign. Hopefully this generation will grow up being more aware from being media whores and vote. If you could vote for a president through text messages I'm sure a lot more people would vote.

I had a good idea like this but involving hide and seek. The president obviously will have spent 4 years in the white house so will know all the best hiding places, but there will be at least 2 candidates trying to find him sooooo...

If one of the candidate's finds the president's hiding place the winner is whoever finds him first and then the president has to find BOTH candidates in less time or the previous winner is the new president of the united states of a-freakin-merica babies!
