I really want to do this because I have spare time and want to share all the music I hear as it's so rare that anyone i know knows of any of the bands I listen to.

Is it straight forward? Are there legal issues? Any advice?

Hey, it's not really hard at all to start up something basic on blogspot.com . As far as legal issues are concerned, it's not legal to post any type of music for free without permission. In saying that, the majority of people do it now and (providing you advocate the buying of music, and give links to places that readers can buy the music from) nobody really cares a great deal. With regards to blogging music that hasn't been released yet, a lot of artists release one single before releasing the album and that's generally the only song they are ok with you blogging. Although, this isn't really a problem until you start getting lots of readers (unless you're morgan).

The most challenging aspect is keeping it up. You'll start up with heaps of enthusiasm but after a while you'll be like...what the fuck do I write about now. With regards to file hosting, you probably don't want to pay for it unless you're getting heaps and heaps of readers. You can use all the free file hosting sites like yousendit, rapidshare, and zshare but they don't allow hotlinking. The only free site that I know of that does is hotlinkfiles.com.

Helpful?

Yes, very helpful thankyou! There are a few things there I had thought of and some I hadn't and some I forgot to mention!

The enthusiasm thing obviously, it's the same with anything it's human nature and even though I'd have every intention of updating regularly I know it won't happen!

I heard (from 3hive my favourite music blog) that if a file is being shared somewhere free on the internet like on myspace, their website, forum etc. then it's fine for you to put it up but I think this is really restrictive, any advice on whether you should only stick to those or whether you should reccomend other sources? I'm at a little bit of a loss on this one as I have no idea

And of course- what site is good to start this up on? I would prefer it to be a free site with an option of upgrading at a later date. I know little of blogging sites!

Thanks again!

And don't worry about getting nabbed for posting songs. If they don't want you to post something they'll leave you a comment saying so and you take it down. It really isn't a big deal at all.

you are mistaken my friend...it WILL happen...how much you let it affect you is key. I have a website, and I'm still excited about it...but I can;t be bothered to update it sometimes...

Lol, I think you misinterpreted me! What I said was that even though I would have every intention of updating regularly i know I won't update it regularly! I'm not that naive!

But for now- I've started up! http://retrospeedlab.blogspot.com/

make it different/interesting. there's 1,000,000s of music blogs out there, everyone thinks that other people care about their taste in music.

I too am under this dilusion! Haha I know it's not true but i also just want a record of all the music I like and if someone else is into it, awesome! I would prefer that though rather than just writing to myself! How do you avoid such a tragedy?!
