independent movies is like independent music. it's not a genre. Moreover, films that are independently funded and made free of immediate studio attachment are kind of far and few between these days.

it just weirds me out when people say 'i like indie movies' or 'what's some good indie music to listen to?' Doing the opposite would be like me saying 'I only watch movies that are distributed by Paramount Pictures' or 'these are the labels who's bands i'll listen to.'

I agree, but I've gotten past the whole discrepancy and just use it to mean whatever the person who hears it thinks it is...

Here's a few lesser-known ones I've seen recently that I liked:

World's Fastest Indian
Bella
Hard Candy
Eagle vs. Shark
The Orphanage (Spanish)

And these that got some pub because of the Oscars but deserved it:

Lars and the Real Girl
The Diving Bell and the Butterfly
Once

aside from those mentioned, I really liked:

wristcutters
darjeeling limited - don't know if this is considered indie, but the whole movie looks like a music video, funnier if with subtitles (although the movie is in english)
brick - genre is mystery/crime
art school confidential - genre is mystery/crime
cashback- really cool :]
donnie darko- old school cult classic
billy elliot - not your typical dance movie
dedication - mandy moore is in this one
saved - yep this one as well
trainspotting - again old school cult classic
almost famous - same dude as in wristcutters

and although this is mentioned before:
once - just for emphasis, really great
