Hey guys,
thought you might be interested in listening to my EP "That's Life". Folk-rock in the vein of The Lucksmiths, The Decemberists, Sparklehorse and other stuff like that!
And the boards here are notoriously harsh, and I would appreciate some criticism as well Big Grin
myspace is in the sig as well! thanks guys
here's a megaupload link :

You hooked me with Sparklehorse.

Notes From My Radio is really soild, i like the instrumentation. Break'er Break'er is good, but your vocals don't sound too strong.
I only listened to the myspace songs but it's pretty good.

i agree with morgan. your vocals aren't too great for "break'er break'er".

but "notes from my radio" is reallllly good.

i'll listen to the rest if i find time.

Notes:

-Sometimes the singing (particularly falsetto bg vocals) are a bit off (pitch-wise).
-Sometimes the timing is off (especially in break'er break'er.
-Sometimes the slide guitar-ing sustains on a note that is a little bit off center, so it kind of makes it unsettling sounding. (the timing is off a bit too).
-Notes from my radio is really good!! The banjo adds a lot to it.

Questions:
What instruments ar you using? (like guitar names etc.)
What software are you using?
What mics, etc.
-How much editing do you do? It's tedious, but for stuff that i work hard on, i like to make sure everything is on beat, so sometimes i'll do a lot of cutting and moving things around, y'know?

The recordings sound pretty solid! I'm pretty jealous, I must say haha.

I also wanted to know about the electronic synthy sound in break'er break'er... it sounds a lot like my hammond piper II (which no offense, is kinda dirty sounding, and doesn't suit the level of fedelity that your notes from my radio has).

Overall your stuff is pretty good, and your vocal range makes me sad (in that mine is so smalled, and you can hit those high notes). I think you would benefit a lot from vocal training, or by just doing vocal eases/vocal training and stuff in the morning or something. (Just practice arppeggios on major/minor chords at first and chromatically work your way up).

wow thanks for all the input! Certainly I'm no audio technician or pro musician, so I know next to nothing about recording. But to answer some of your questions:

Instruments - '96 Fender DG21s, Fender 60th Anni Tele, some shit casio keyboard, a no name lapsteel, and a no name banjo (but it does have a remo head)

I use Audacity to record and I had a usb pre amp with a condensor mic (don't remember exact specs off hand, and it's 3000 miles away at home in the US)

I don't edit at all really. I guess I don't really know how and I've heard that audacity isn't good for multitrack editing. The only thing I really do is change levels.

And the dirty sound of the keyboard in break'er is probably due to the fact that I just used some crap logitech mic to record that part, cause I didn't have my stuff with me to proper record.

What do you use to record/edit? cause it sounds like you know a hell of a lot more about this shit than I do.
Thanks for the nice words as well!
