To me, it sounds like a new turn, down a road that may others have already been down. I also usually love their minimalistic melodic guitar solos but the one here tried my patience. Maybe it will grow on me...

although i've loved coldplay even through the X&Y phase.

i was equally excited about new death cab and new coldplay...

and 'violet hill' has beat out 'i will possess your heart' for me.

I can take this seriously. This sound like they put some effort into it and tried to do something new. The guitar is actually remotely interesting this time around... it almost sounds like Jon Buckland learned to do something other than using dense amounts of reverb/delay/distortion on single-note U2 riffs. Melody is kinda unique, the arrangement surprises you a little and challenges your traditional Coldplay form.

But it's kinda meh.

I agree with everything except that it's meh...
imo, it is on par with their early stuff (not similar style, similar quality)

The song is annoyingly "Look at us! We've changed!". The electric guitar reeks of desperation.

Doesn't stop it from being an ok song though..

I've yet to make up my mind about this song. It is bizarre for Coldplay, but that might be a good thing. I have to take some time to deliberate, but the lyrics seem slightly cliche, although at the same time I can't quite make out what the meaning is. Definitely disagree with the guy who said it beats out IWPYH. No contest.

However, it's already growing on me, to be honest.

I really like this song and I've nver particularly liked Coldplay.

I like it waaaaay better than the single. Might as well be a U2 song...but it would be a really good U2 song.
