How does walla get that reverb sound in the beginning where he tremolo picks the shit out of the guitar but at the same time doesnt get the strings to ring out its like just background noise its crazy. Like you can kind of here strings being tremolo picked in the beginning but you hear mostly just background wall of noise how does he get that wall of noise?

Turn the reverb on your amp all the way up, bro

Analog delay with a mostly wet signal i suppose.

I don't believe chris uses a ton of reverb live, but I do know he stops on his delay like kasper said.
my guess though is he might be rolling off his tone knob on his guitar a tad, along with the delay, and perhaps some fender amp reverb in the studio. |

It sounds like what Kasper said, he's probably using mostly wet signal and using something to get rid of the attack.

hahahah yeah the cath one is great
I will give my quick opinion on smashing gear in general. 1. Did Ben actually do damage to his guitars back in the day like that? no-why-money. Now, Ben can replace that in a heartbeat. I think there is some instances when it's fine, like if your guitar tech is screwing your guitars tunings up etc, like in that video ben was having gear problems, and was probably genuinely frustrated. if that happened to ben back in the day, he would of probably stood there and either stopped the song or tried to fix the problem. so much of it is attitude. hendrix and cobain did it for show, as did the who. and I definitely see how there is the point of like, wow way to break something someone could use, and take care of. but since music is art, and some consider performances in destruction a part of it. when I saw a band on saturday night live, all laughing and thinking if they were going to throw their equipment or not, they came off as a total tools. but when you are on your stage and you are emotional/etc I think it can be very effective. which leads me to say, as death cab being a very important band to me, as their songs being extremely emotional I think its totally acceptable in some instances. I remember even seeing Ben's guitar going out at the end of trans and throwing it quite hard at the end of the climax. to me that just makes so much sense, and the time and emotion is right. Plus I don't think any of the band have ever stood there and repeatedly smashed things until they broke. would I throw my only telecaster right now like that? hell no! if I were in bens situation and had a huge crew to take care of my tech problems and run out to any plea, and pick up another one of my many touring guitars, well maybe. I agree though steven, there is definitely a line, and I think it is only drawn by the opinion of, was that necessary? did that enhance the sentiment of the song? yes that was a long kind of not needed post at 1:30 in the morning, but hey I personally got amped up the first time I saw them and Ben angrily launched his guitar behind the backdrop at the end of Prove My Hypothesis |
