So I'm thinking of starting a vinyl collection by first investing in a turntable then buying all the DCfC LPs... so I got a few questions.

How much are cheap turntables?
How much are vinyls compared to CDs?
Do most bands have vinyls released?

I'd say a cheap turntable is between $100 and $200. However, try not to get one from Target, Wal-Mart, etc. That's what I did and it broke a month or two later.

I would just go for a nice direct drive turntable, so you don't have to worry about the belt getting screwed up. I personally have a Stanton t80 and it's great.

Vinyl is usually about $10-$15 more than the CD ($20-$25+).

I wouldn't say most bands, but a lot of indie bands do.

I'm just going to warn you, getting all the DCfC LPs is going to cost quite a bit. Trans - $50+, Photo - $60+, Facts - $60-$70.

Plans and Airplanes are pretty easy to find, but those three go for quite a bit since they are out of print. If you're going for Facts on white, I got it for about $110. Soooo.... yeah, it's pretty expensive.

Good luck to you.

It's cool. Just had a birthday, nothing I'd like more than to spend all that easy-earned cash on my favorite band. =)

Sorry about the double post but are you sure about the prices? Or is it stupid to buy em from eBay? Because I just found a copy of Trans. for $30 and Plans for $10.

Oh and is there a particular size of record I should get? Not to mention a turntable that works with it? Sorry if these questions are very... ignorant-sounding. I didn't even know vinyls were still being made until last year. -_-

Keep in mind that $30 Trans still has 6 days left, and the $50 one still has 4 days...

Plans should be easy to find and relatively cheap. I haven't seen em for $10, since that's extremely cheap for a 180 gram double LP, but that'd be a great deal.

As for size, most/all LPs/EPs are 12". Singles are 7". There are some 10" records, but I don't have any.

Don't worry, any turntable should be able to play all sizes/speeds.

I was thinking about getting one of those before I got my Stanton. Looks fine to me, but you never know since it's from the '80s and is at $10...

This might be a stupid question, but you know you'll need a receiver and everything also, right?

My thoughts exactly but hey, ebay is pretty safe so if it just flat out doesn't work or breaks within the week, then I should be fine. =P

I personally like to get my stuff new, so of course I'm going to say you should get one new but if the guy has good feedback, doesn't look fishy, etc. I say go for it.

haha ok so you're going to need to plug your turntable into a receiver, which then goes into speakers. I wouldn't know how much they cost since I'm using my dad's old one, but uh.. yeah.

As for the new/used thing: I really don't care just as long as it works and doesn't totally suck.

Annd... what's this receiver look like? Wait, stupid pointless question. Here's a better one: Are they commonly found on ebay ya reckon?

Basically just a big box with plugs on the back, buttons on the front for radio, cassette, phono, etc (at least that's the way mine is).

Just search "audio receiver" on eBay and see what comes up.
