I don't want to make this a gear thread but...
I didn't want to make a new topic...

The question is over delay pedals,
I think I'm more interested in an analog delay, do to easier controls, warmer sound, but I don't know if I should go for the Boss Dm-3 or the Ibanez Ad-9.

Do any of you guys have any input?

Digital delay and analog delay are two different sounds, so you shouldn't debate between the two.
I have a dm-2, dm-3, and numerous other analog and digital delays, and had an ad-9 but got rid of it. The best sound I've gotten is from the dm-3 unless you want to buy rack effects, then I would say the ibanez ad202 gets some pretty sweet sounds. The dm-2 is muddier sounding. I'd definitely stick with the dm-3, they're not hard to find on ebay, but they're gaining in price these days. The ibanez and maxon ad-9 re-issues are too expensive for my liking. If you do go with a re-issue ad-9, make sure you get the maxon one. The Ibanez one uses some new chips which generate clicking noises, where the maxon one uses some of the same chips original ones which makes it much cleaner. The ibanez one also gets some really unnatural sounds when it degrades.

Overall, get a dm-3 for sure.

This isn't really about analog delay, but I'm thinking about getting a Boss DD-6 digital delay. Does anyone here have one?

If you're going to get a DD make it the digitech digidelay it's a little cheaper and way better than the boss pedals.

That being said, I reccomend trying to find the aformentioned boss Ad which are on ebay from time to time, the ad202 is great but a rack unit

I'll debate that. The reverse function on the dd-6 alone makes it better. Though the digitech pedal has 4 seconds of delay, it's main feature is that it has different delays, and as far as multi effect delays go, the line 6 delay modeler kicks the crap out of anything else. If you want a digital delay pedal, the earlier dd-3 (dd-3 version 1) is the best because it's mainly analog until the last step. The newer dd-3 isn't as nice, but you can mod them to sound just as nice as the original.

and yes, I have a dd-6, it gets some really cool sounds, but if you set the repeat too high the feedback gets pretty dirty. I believe Gibbard uses two, you'll see him down at his pedals messing with the knobs on them sometimes at the end of some songs when they bust out into a jam. Also. if you use two digital delays together you can get an analog sound.

Does anybody know of any good delay plugins for recording software? I don't really play live so I haven't invested in any pedals yet...

The Digitech has a reverse. As you said it has 4 seconds of reverse, a convincing tape delay, stereo delays, a 4 second loops, "infinite delay" (hold) that seriously works (I've used it to loop a harmonic through a 2 minute portion of a song without any volume loss)

It's just a really great D.D. and it's like 99 dollars. I also have an AD9, and when you string them together with a good overdrive, an LF-7 (The best and shittiest pedal simultaneously) some glorious noise can be produced

while we are kind of on the topic of pedals... i saw kt tunstall live one time and she was using this pedal that recorded (maybe?) whatever she played/sang and replayed it at a certain beat, which i think she chose. does anyone know what this is?

Most likely a loop pedal.

Thanks (Super)James and meandthesea I knew that someone on these boards (most likely James) would have wise words about Delay as I remembered a thread long ago that briefly touched on the topic.

Doesn't Ben use the DD-3? atleast as I read on the gear section, I tried that out but all those knobs and click settings were too confusing, hence why I much prefer the (controls, atleast) analog delay pedals.

I'm currently just using the delay setting on my amp, I like how it sounds sometimes and my amp isnt digital or w/e so I'm assuming the delay it emulates is analog.

maybe it's dd-3's, I know he uses two boss digital delays. Not sure if they're first version though.

what kind of amp do you have?

I know! It makes awesome noise, it pretty much destroys any signal you run through it.

she might have been using a phrase recorder, the boss rc-20 or rc-20xl or something newer. I use 2 rc-20xl pedals and they're great, the only thing is the "replayed it at a certain beat" which might be a function on the new version of that pedal, or on some other brands loop pedal. Might even be able to do it on a line 6 delay modeler pedal as it can record loops too. She might have used something else to slow or speed the tempo also.

ya it's hilarious, but it does get some really awesome noise with analog delay. I was going to sell my metal zone for like 12 dollars, but then played it with my dm-2 which is really muddy, and then I ran that thing with it and for some reason it made it sound clearer.
