I gotta be honest. The more I hear the song and read the lyrics, the more I'm pissed at how bad this video is. This is an incredible and emotionally deep song filled with pain and a despair yet as melancholy as the piano is, when the drums start, the combination of drums and piano gives it almost an uplifiting "look at the bright side" kind of feeling. (If you didn't know the lyrics, you could bop your head to it) This song is brilliant, this video is a shame.
Unless, and I think I figured it out now, the director of this video wanted you to feel the same anguish and torment visually that death cab tries to impart on you lyrically.
So many visuals in the lyrics that you could have tried to capture, instead you thought eighty different angles of the sun and moon behind clouds was more appropriate.

I kind of thought the video was trying to show how time passes, like change, which is kind of what the song is about.

crazystargrl, I agree, everything zipping by like our lives in a blur (when one looks back), shadows of what we once were and what we have now become, seasons change and years pass.
But it could have been done in such a better form. Instead of just the repeating of those items, it could have been snippets around a story. Again, this is one of the most visual songs lyrically and the song wasn't justified by the video. (in my opinion).

Upon rewatching this video, I love it even more. I now think of it as someone going through memories, some fast forwarded, some in real time. The character is the person who experienced all of these things, the story is what is being remembered. If you watch a tv show or movie, everything unfolds within an hour or two...or sometimes 3 now (fuck)... but everything in between is lost and we spend more time on these supposedly uneventful things as we do on what is considered interesting. There's this great weird movie with Robin Williams in it where he plays a "cutter" who edits the memories of people to make a video montage of their life from their view for a funeral. I think it's somewhat like this.

This song is one of Death Cab's (Ben's) finest ever written. This video was WAYYYYYYY beneath this song. I wouldn't have a problem with this video if it went with a different song. It was cool. It was fun to watch. It was tricky. Blah, blah, blah. But it was just so far below any expectation I could imagine for this incredible song. Bottom line it was a HUGE disappointment for me. HUGE. Not even close.

I was really captivating. And it's the best song on Plans, so it wins.
